I'm not a huge rugby fane, but this story keeps rearing it's bizare head with the picture of the fella walking off the pitch with joke shop blood dripping out of his gob.

This seems to have cost a few people their jobs, and brought shame on the sport but what I don't get is:

what the fuck was it all about. Why did they hatch this crazy scheme in the first place ? What were they trying to achieve by having a player lead off the pitch with a fake injury and why couldn't he just have pretending to have twisted an ankle or something ?

Harlequin's Fly-half(No.10) Nick Evans, who is also their star player, went off injured early in the second half. They then brought on their second choice fly-half, only for him to get injured. The third choice fly-half(the guy who faked the bleeding) had only played a few games for them before and it was a huge game, so the management team didn't have much confidence in him. The Physios somehow patched up Evans and he was fit to continue. The only way they could bring him on was through a blood substitution(You've heard of one of them before I hope). So that's why they faked the bleeding.

Appartently they've done it several times before.

I've heard of a blood transfusion ?

Seriously, I've never heard of a blood substitution. That just sounds very wrong, and reinforces my belief that rugby is fundamentally a stupid game.

It's the same as in football where players have to go and get treatment if they are bleeding. But in rugby whilst a player is getting the treatment they can bring on a sub (including players who have already been substituted).

Quins needed someone on who could get a drop goal or a penalty (as they were 6-5 down) so made it look like Williams (a winger) was bleeding so that Evans (the goal kicking dude) could come on.

They probably would have gotten away with it if Williams hadn't winked as he came off the pitch. And now he's sold everyone else at the club completely up the river (which will make him very unpopular in the game I'd imagine).

Still it's good to see the RFU properly clamping down on this. Rugby kicks football's arse when it comes to discipline and even though I'm a Quins fan I'm very pleased to see this form of blatant cheating being punished very severely. Uefa, Fifa and the Premier League should take note...ie grow some bollocks and actually enforce your own rules once in a while.

Which begs the question why the fuck did Evans go off in the first place if he was able to come back on and play.

In terms of refereeing discipline Rugby (and most other sports except Baseball) may be able to teach football a lesson, but clearly not in devious underhand, shoot the whole sport in the arse, cheatingness.

Fundamentally a shit game for geezers who don't have the coordination to play football and like sticking their heads up other blokes arses.

Let's be honest when it comes to a sport shooting itself in the arse football is way way ahead of rugby.

Match fixing, hooliganism, diving, Arsene Wenger. All of these attrocities have happened in football whilst rugby has been relatively well behaved up until now.

At the time Nick Evans was still recovering from a knee injury and it was obvious during the game that it was still affecting him. Our other fly half Chris Malone came on to replace Evans but he picked up a hamstring injury. Malone was then replaced by the winger Tom Williams.

The problem was that Williams has little experience at fly half and probably wouldn't have been able to handle the pressure to kick the winning points (Quins were losing by one) within the last ten minutes of the game. That's when it was decided for Evans to come back on.
