The issue is that bringing a player like josh on to close a potentially massive game out when we may only be a single goal in front is extreemly risky.
Id prefer eriksen to drop into cm later in games just to control the tempo and ping in around with precision into the right areas using his experience. If we are winning comfortably then yes pair up dier and wanyama in the cm just to shut up shop and manage the game.

What other option do we have? Dembele can't complete 90 minutes, let alone play three matches in a week. The Dier/Wanyama pairing hasn't worked, Onomah would be a massive risk, and Eriksen has played (and excelled) in CM as recently as New Year's Day.

Why would Onomah be a massive risk. When have any of the development or young players we've played been a disaster? Could he possibly be any worse than Dembele or Dier were at the back end of last season ?

It would be a risk insofar as Onomah has never performed at the senior level. Of course that could be down to being played out of position, but putting it to the test with so much potentially on the line can only be considered a risk.

There's no more on the line now than there would have been 3 months ago. 3pts. And as I pointed out earlier, he couldn't be any worse than Dembele or Dier were in the run in last season.

Chasing down the league leaders at the business end of the season is a completely different scenario to a random match in January. As for your second point, the whole team was awful during the run-in last season. That could be attributed to fatigue, mentality, or inexperience in a title run. To lay it at the feet of two individuals is reductive.

Regardless, it is not a question of whether Onomah would hypothetically improve on the performance of our players from last April, it's a question of whether he is a better option than our current alternatives. Eriksen has played well every time he's been asked to drop deeper than normal, and Onomah has literally never had a single good performance for the senior team. The prudent choice is obvious.

I actually think Onomah would surprise a few providing he was used alongside Wanyama
If he is selected then I hope you are right, and I remain optimistic that he has much more to offer than he has shown when played out of position thus far. I'm just guessing that, given the circumstances, Poch will elect to go with a more proven option.

Gutted for him. He'd just forced his way into the starting XI. We will need to wrap Eriksen up in cotton wool between games now.

I'd completely forgotten Onomah even existed until I read this thread.

The 2 games we've played in 3421 with eriksen as one of the 4, or perhaps a more 3313, we've won. Watford last season and hull this season. It was him and dembele against Watford. Not saying it's right for every occasion but in some games it's an option

Edit: That's not quite right, dembele and Carroll started the eriksen came on at half time for dembele
He has played there twice this season once v Hull where he scored 2 goals and the other v Watford (this season), where he looked like the second coming of Modric. Both times were with Wanyama.

Tom Carroll signed a new contract months before he left...

I'd love to see Onomah make it cos he's a yid but on his performances this season when he has played, I can't see him here for too much longer. He's not good enough to get a good run in the team so it's not overly fair on him really, but it is what it is.

Fingers crossed Winks' injury isn't too bad. I don't even flinch when his name is on the team sheet instead of any of our big guns. He'll be the first choice central midfielder in the England team at the 2020 Euros.
8 months ago people were saying the exact thing about winks and Onomah is one of the most talented players to come out of the academy

Also its worth noting that this is a player who has been forced to be playing out of position unlike Sissoko, Onomah prior to joining the first team had never been near the wings and so its no surprise really he has looked poor

I really like Winks. I think he will be a top player. Good enough already to play for any team outside the top 6 or 7 in the prem. Has a bit of everything and always very positive and progressive with his use of the ball. Excellent young player.

Small fracture of the ankle per HW himself.

Excuse my ignorance, but that's actually good news - no? It means he's out for the season, but we're not looking at a LONG recovery like it would be for ligament damage. Two / three months. Something like that?

I agree it wasn't just the CM's but I was talking about them as that's where Onomah will play, but lets be clear, I think Dier and Dembele were pretty pivotal in our collapse, they are the engine room, and that engine was spluttering and what Dembele did at Chelsea was idiotic.
