He needs to look at what his predecessor Tom Carroll who realized he needed to leave to salvage his career.
Uhh what? At the same age as Winks is right now Tom Carroll was playing in the championship with Swansea and most recently played last season in League 1 and his contract wasn't picked up.

If I were Winks and I saw that I'd probably stick around and collect my paycheck.

Awww, Tom Carroll.

I've got a vacancy for a husband if he needs a new gig.

Winks can fuck off though. He'd do for half hour at most.

The reason he is still here is that hes a fucking Championship player at best and theres no firm interest in him.
Is there not? I think there's plenty of clubs in the top leagues who would be interested. The main issue is what are his wages because he's probably on too much here and does he want to leave for a lesser club. He's clearly not good enough for us but I can absolutely see him at a club fighting for a mid table finish. His problem is he's at a top club and thinks he belongs but if he lowers his expectations I bet he gets a move. I don't think we can ask for more than 20m either though.

This thread sent me on a wiki wander of midfielders that might have been. Tom Carroll is 30 now & is looking for a club after not being retained by Ipswich. Alex Pritchard is 29 (!) and playing for Sunderland after 3 years at Huddersfield.

In that context I can understand Winky clinging on to Spurs, as frustrating as it is.

He’d be best advised to sign the next best 4 or 5 year deal for highest wages possible - I have the feeling his next contract will be his last decent one.

Not sure they are the best player comparisons given that Pritchard have 0 Spurs starts in the league and Carroll have 4.

True, winks has done far better than either of them, but I think it illustrates that the cliff edge is a sharp one for mid rate midfielders after they leave us.
