I heard that and wondered the same thing last nite. Upon reading the paper this morning it was apparently burnley fans due to his connections with blackburn. He was also pelted with vegetables while taking a corner.

That's probably what gave him his stomach bug.

Hate to agree with someone being negative...but he is so disappointing so far. He crosses too soon; he doesn't like playing on the left, and yet strangely, seems more prepared to try to get to the by-line when on the left; he has a great shot and scored some amazing goals at B'Burn, but lagely, with one memoreable exception, doesn't look like he could hit a barn door.

We know he can do it (he did at B'Burn against top Prem. teams), and I really wanted the guy at the Lane, but the excuses I personally made for him, that he was suffering stage fright, and playing out of position, etc., are fast running out...he has to imrove

Bentley hasn't had a good game since he signed for us, let's not beat around the bush. In theory, we should have a much stronger team than we had last year, but Bentley's failure to produce has gone a long way towards preventing that.

HOWEVER, the boy is, without doubt, an exceptionally talented player. I remember watching him play for Arsenal a few times in the League Cup, and he stood out a mile. I even called my dad in to watch. I said "Dad, dad, have a look at this boy Bentley! He's going to be a star!" That's what I said. And he very nearly has been - I don't think £15 million was an unfair reflection of his worth to Blackburn over the last couple of seasons. For some reason though, it hasn't worked out for him since he's been with us. Exactly why that is, I don't know, but guys... GUYS... it'll all be okay. In time, he'll be great for us. Chillax.

it's probably as simple as him not having a proper preseason

Also it seems Bale and Bentley have gone off form together...bad influence on each other?

Bentley is out of position, judge him when he plays right wing.

Obviously Harry knows this as he keeps getting subbed. But we really dont have anyone for the left wing. O'Hara is great as a sub, not so good for a full game i feel.

He is playing on the left because harry is filling a gap we have in our first 11. Lennon has been far more effective so he cannot justify dropping Aaron for Dave. He lost his place to a better performer. If we had a proper left winger available, he wouln't get a start. He should thank his lucky stars he is starting games at the moment, rather than whinging and bitching about it

Snap mate. I was in HK in 2003 or 2004, I can't remember, and I had to watch the Scum against Boro in the CC cup, with some dude who supported the scum but knew fuck all about football (Like most people I met in HK, probably only liked it due to gambling purposes), while my mates all played a card game I didn't understand. Anyway I digress, middle of the second half the Scum bring on a lad who scores an unbelievable chip and I say to the lad I'm watching the game with this boy is gonna be good. That boy was David Bentley.
I think Bentley will come good. He might not have pace but once he really settles into the team his technique and ability with the ball will shine through . Just give him a chance.

Lennon has put his resurgence this season down to having completed a full preseason for the first time in 3 years

Lots of people were happy for us to sell Lennon over the summer and yet he's know one of our better players again.

I am not saying Bentley is as good as Beckham but in some ways they are similar types of player.
They can both put dangerous balls into the box and they can shoot from distance.

However when Beckham played for United he always had his RB Gary Neville either inside or on the overlap, making sure that the other team couldn't double up on Beckham and giving him the time and space to get in dangerous balls.
We don't really do that, either for Bentley or Lennon,I just think that if our RB bombed forward a bit more regularly,it would help our attacks and may help make our crosses a bit more precise.

Thing is..........I always feared Bentley when he played against us and he has proven in past seasons to be dangerous from set pieces.

I think Harry thinks the same and is giving him an extended run to come right.

Confidence is a big thing too and he needs to have some success.

Taken from football365. Article on players who have gone downhill this season. I copied it over for the Harry quote. It appeared in the sun today with a bit more detail. Seems like Harry aint buying this illness excuse

4) David Bentley, Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham should have been the making of Bentley. Instead, moving to the Lane has exposed his inadequacies and limitations.

Extremely effective because of his crossing ability in a Blackburn side that generally included two traditional centre-forwards, Bentley has failed - so far - to fit in to a Spurs side that tends to operate with just one out-and-out forward. The ability to cross doesn't count as much, therefore - which also explains why Aaron Lennon, arguably a worse crosser of a ball than any other first-choice winger in the league, has taken his place on the right.

All of which culminated this week in Harry Redknapp hauling him off at half-time against Burnley - "He was ill," declared Redknapp before a ghastly pause and the ultimate put-down: "Apparently" - and the Daily Mail dismissing him as 'the poor man's David Beckham'. And that's being kind. Even Tottenham fans are beginning to notice that Bentley is even slower than Beckham.

in my opinion, the criticism Lennon was getting was completly out of order. His crossing may be not have improved, but his overall game last season massivly improved. His toughness and his workrate were constantly overlooked. And he was played on the left, right and in the middle.

pre season was back in july. Its january now

i think the lad is shot of confidence at the moment.he needs a run on the right hand side and needs to be playing 20yerds up the pitch, not around the half way line which hes doing at the moment.i think lennon would do a better job on the left at the moment....

Credit where credit is due, he came on and did well today. Maybe that was the kick up the arse he needed?

Also agree that he really looked like he had the bit between the teeth yesterday. His crossing with his left foot was arguably as good, if not better, than Lennon's with his right.

Words are not quite being eaten yet, but that was his most promising contribution to a game (bar the wonder goal) I have seen. Lets just hope he keeps on fighting and improving.

I still don't understand why Harry persists with playing him on the left. Well, I do, but I don't agree with it.
