Have any of our players earned the right to move?

I know, when it comes down to it, what I'm about to say won't matter at the negotiating table but...

Have any of those players linked with a move this summer earned the right to leave Tottenham?

It makes me laugh how some players feel they have a divine right to play Champions League football. This isn't about the talent it takes to secure lucrative wages and play on the biggest stage in club football, but the sheer sweat, blood and determination it takes over the course of a season to be able to request a move at the end of it.

Luka Modric was brilliant last season and everyone (except us Spurs fans) seemed to empathised with his so-called situation. He's carried the team, given his all every game and has earned his move. If he'd have left then we might have been hard pressed, based on his perfomances and effort, to deny him a move. But he stayed at Spurs. This summer will no doubt see a recurrance of that wish to earn more money, win trophies and play CL football. But has he earned it this season? Would he be leaving Spurs the 'right' way?

Same for Gareth Bale. Some spectacular performances last season and at the beginning of this season but, since he's started placing himself anywhere he seemingly wants, save a performance away to Norwich, he's gone missing. To me it looks as if he can just turn up because his name is sharing column inches and web headlines with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Does his effort this season warrant that? Can he honestly say he's given all he has to give and that the players around him aren't good enough to help him fulfil his ambitions. Does he owe us another season?

In recent years we've seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Cesc Fabregas both denied moves, initially, to two of the biggest clubs in the world. Did they sulk and decide life is no longer worth living if the shirt they get paid astronomical amounts to run around in wasn't the right colour? No. They rolled their sleeves up and worked harder than ever. Their fans couldn't ask any more of them really (other than to stay) and they left on relatively good terms. I didn't see many West Ham fans really begrudging Scott Parker his move from West Ham to Spurs because, despite the obvious bad blood, he'd literally run himself into the ground trying to save them from relegation.

Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and any others who feel they have the right to play above our current level will need to prove this. Not by playing a few games well here and there, but by rolling up their sleeves and really show their worth. You might be a fantastic player but you have to earn the right to move. Are these players earning anything other than their wages of late?

During the whole Modric-saga I said the same thing i feel now. No player has "the right" to play in the Champions League. If you want to be in the CL, qualify. Simple.

Let's not include Bale with Modric. Let's not compare Modric to Ronaldo or Fabregas in their respective situations.
Fabregas and Ronaldo showed huge respect to their previous clubs and their fans during their transfer scenarios.

Ronaldo left to play for the worlds biggest club, in Spain, a club that was his favourite apparently. Fabregas left for 'his' club, again, in Spain, his homeland. Neither would have even considered moving to another Premier league club and I suspect enither would entertain coming back to the premier league unless it was to play for United and Arsenal respectively.

Bale has not flirted with any rivals, seems happy at Tottenham and has said on plenty of occassions he isn't looking to move. He has said he wants to play abroad at some point though and of course, like any player, has admitted it would be hard to turn down real or Barca.

As for earning moves? Not sure how that works. I cannot begrudge anyone leaving to join the elite ( Spains big two, Italy's big three, Bayern, United at a push ), especially if they do it in the correct manner ( see Fabregas and Ronaldo )
Wanting to move to Chelsea and then sulking about it because you can't understand why you aren't being allowed to? Pathetic.

as a financially stable football club with ambition we should only ever sell a player if it benefits us ie) we dont want them or if their contract is at a detrimentle level for sell on & they wont sign a new one...

so modric & bale should be kept for another 2 seasons...

if by then we havent progressed then they should be sold...(if they dont sign a new contract of course)

Ronaldo stayed a year longer than he wanted to out of respect for SAF and Man United. He earned his move through his performances, hard work and respect.

It's like, for us, earning a promotion at work.

You can definitely earn or deserve a move to a bigger, better club. And you can certainly sulk and refuse to play when you feel 'shackled' to a club you no longer feel is equal to you.

I think my question was pretty logical and simple (it has been a long day at work, mind)

Has Bale come out and said something? or are you lumping him in with the rat creature because of the tired old barca link that sprouted after the 2-1 victory over milan last season.

Ok, first things first...

Barca link started after the 4-3 game in Italy. We beat them 3-1 at WHL.

I wasn't 'lumping' him in anything. It was a genuine question because, along with Modric, he is our biggest star and will no doubt look to leave if, not this summer, then next if we still aren't playing CL football.

No.

None of them has earned the right to move to an elite Champion's League club.

They have barely earned their tens of thousands a week at times (obviously, this time I refer to is between mid-February and today).

Problem is these days (and probably since agents came into the game) someone at a club will have a private word with a players agent and basically tell them we want you next season so I bet Modric already knows that certain clubs will be after him so doesn't need to show much blood and sweat etc. He played well the last 2 seasons and that has been enough to attract richer clubs than ourselves. It's shit but that's the game now.

This is a really good thread.

Last summer in the Modric scenario my thought was...well if it was me and somebody came along offering me CL football, a PL challenge, and the chance to earn maybe 2x my salary....how and why would I say no? I mean its like life - if someone is going to pay you MORE to do the SAME JOB, why would you say no?

And now I still think thats true but - and this is what angers me most about our current plight - the players don't care. These guys - Modric, Bale, Lennon, Adebayor - they don't care. They are the players who are not performing and yet they will turn around in the summer and say "I WANT TO PLAY IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE". Yet they don't seem to grasp the reason the club is not in the Champions League-the players are not performing.

The truth anyway is that its all bollocks. If you paid them equivalent wages to the players at Chelsea, they wouldn't care so much about the CL. I think then you may see people like Bale stay and fight for a CL spot unless Barcelona or Madrid come along-then its just game over, you can't stop players going there.

Maybe we are naive, we love our club but we need to realise that even a youth product and fan like Ledley King would have moved for greater riches had he not had his injury problems. The players just DON'T CARE, look at Andy Carroll diving against his boyhood club Newcastle, Ashley Young did it to the club that gambled on him and made him a star.

This is why, for me, I am slowly losing interest in football - the players are just not likeable anymore. We hate Arsenal but I always respected Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp and David Seaman. Everybody loved Gianfranco Zola, Paolo Di Canio; they respected Stuart Pearce and Alan Shearer; admired the genius of Cantona and Le Tissier.

So to be honest, for me...Modric, Bale, Ade, Lennon...they can all fuck off. The players I still respect are Parker, Walker, Ekotto, Defoe and Dawson. Because these guys when they go out always try their best and acknowledge the fans...Walker I am so proud of because ever since the start for him at Spurs he has always stayed behind after the final whistle to applaud the fans - people notice these things and respect it. If Walker got an offer from Madrid and left I would have respect for him because (maybe I am a fool here) but I believe he genuinely was proud to play for THFC.

Defoe has earnt his move to QPR. Gallas to the UAE.

And Bassong has played like he deserves to stay at Wolves.
