I know, when it comes down to it, what I'm about to say won't matter at the negotiating table but...
Have any of those players linked with a move this summer earned the right to leave Tottenham?
It makes me laugh how some players feel they have a divine right to play Champions League football. This isn't about the talent it takes to secure lucrative wages and play on the biggest stage in club football, but the sheer sweat, blood and determination it takes over the course of a season to be able to request a move at the end of it.
Luka Modric was brilliant last season and everyone (except us Spurs fans) seemed to empathised with his so-called situation. He's carried the team, given his all every game and has earned his move. If he'd have left then we might have been hard pressed, based on his perfomances and effort, to deny him a move. But he stayed at Spurs. This summer will no doubt see a recurrance of that wish to earn more money, win trophies and play CL football. But has he earned it this season? Would he be leaving Spurs the 'right' way?
Same for Gareth Bale. Some spectacular performances last season and at the beginning of this season but, since he's started placing himself anywhere he seemingly wants, save a performance away to Norwich, he's gone missing. To me it looks as if he can just turn up because his name is sharing column inches and web headlines with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Does his effort this season warrant that? Can he honestly say he's given all he has to give and that the players around him aren't good enough to help him fulfil his ambitions. Does he owe us another season?
In recent years we've seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Cesc Fabregas both denied moves, initially, to two of the biggest clubs in the world. Did they sulk and decide life is no longer worth living if the shirt they get paid astronomical amounts to run around in wasn't the right colour? No. They rolled their sleeves up and worked harder than ever. Their fans couldn't ask any more of them really (other than to stay) and they left on relatively good terms. I didn't see many West Ham fans really begrudging Scott Parker his move from West Ham to Spurs because, despite the obvious bad blood, he'd literally run himself into the ground trying to save them from relegation.
Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and any others who feel they have the right to play above our current level will need to prove this. Not by playing a few games well here and there, but by rolling up their sleeves and really show their worth. You might be a fantastic player but you have to earn the right to move. Are these players earning anything other than their wages of late?
