Tottenham's bid for goalkeeper Gomes falls short

Tottenham Hotspur have bid for PSV Eindhoven's Heurelho Gomes as they continue their search for a first-choice goalkeeper for next season. However, it is understood their offer falls short of the €14m (£11.6m) the Dutch club is demanding for the 27-year-old Brazilian international. PSV say they are standing firm on the fee for Gomes, who has a contract until 2012, even though he has been in dispute with them for several months and has claimed it would be impossible for him to stay. Spurs are also facing stiff competition from Milan who, it appears, are prepared to pay the release fee while Arsenal have also inquired about Gomes.

Spurs appear to have cooled their interest in Espanyol's £5m-rated Carlos Kameni, after initially leading the chase for the Cameroonian, while Lyons yesterday refuted claims that they had agreed terms to sell their goalkeeper Gregory Coupet. The 35-year-old has a £2m release clause in his contract and despite Lyons' denials Spurs are interested.
Spurs, having already allowed Radek Cerny to move to Queen's Park Rangers, are hoping to off-load Paul Robinson this summer. So far there has not been a great deal of interest in the England goalkeeper with Middlesbrough, one of the clubs he has been offered to, ruling themselves out despite Mark Schwarzer leaving for Fulham.
A move for Robinson to Aston Villa, in the market for a goalkeeper after deciding not to pay the £10m demanded by Liverpool for Scott Carson, is the most likely option although they, too, are interested in Kameni.
The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, meanwhile, has accused Portsmouth's Lassana Diarra of leaving the club because he lacked patience and panicked following his move from Chelsea last season. "I bought Diarra in the summer because I thought [Mathieu] Flamini might leave at the end of the season," said Wenger. "If he was able to be patient, he would have got his chance. It turned out he wasn't capable of that. With Euro 2008 in mind, he panicked. He couldn't cope with the situation, and also did not want to go on loan."

Wow that is quite the price tag. Wouldn't that be the record for a British club signing of a keeper. Good keeper, great even. But how great?

I know this is going to start a whole Brazilian keepers are shit argument. Which is one of the stupidest stereotypes in football. (although Dida is now officially shit)

They aren't. In fact, other than Germans and the Spaniards, they probably probably produce the best keepers in the world.

Was he that good against us? Some spectacular looking saves but not reliable enough for me. And it also seems that he is a pretty eccentric keeper as well whereas we should really be looking at a more stable and commanding keeper.

Therefore, I do not think it is ideal for us to spend this amount of money of him. I think the Italians produced good keepers as well so maybe we should concentrate on these few countries (Spaing and Germany). Maybe even consider US which has produced very good keepers consistently.

I still am unsure of Gomes, I don't doubt that he is an excellent keeper--has all the qualities but seems to be erratic in the box occasionally. I'd prefer Amelia over Gomes, TBH...

I'm very unsure of gnomes people think they are kind jolly chaps but they are spiteful and totally unsuitable for goalkeeper.

"Best goalkeeper in the world" according to PSV fans, but too eccentric for us, i want a boring keeper.

On what exactly do you base this slightly stereotypical comment??

I assumed the same thing about Italians. But their #2 is Amelia - relegated and their #3 is the backup at Seville. I was actually shocked by this. It seems Series A is stocked full of Brazilian keepers. Probably just a down period. Seems crazy that the Italians wouldn't be in the list to me.

I'm not sure about Gomes, was very hard to beat when we played against PSV but seemed as though he was quite eccentric which isn't something i would want.

He's not that great. I think we should go for one of the up-and-coming German keepers.

Hells yeah.......I still have the power of cognitive dissonance to make me believe that Rene Adler will be our next goalkeeper. I even listed him in the transfer game.

Indeed. It will be interesting to see where Amelia ends up. There seem to be very few rumours linking him to the top Italian clubs, which is a surprize given his Italian #2 status. Perhaps they don't think he's all that....

Since we were linked with him in Jan I've seen him on several occassions. I speciiffically watch wheh he is playing and I don't see what all the fuss is about. He doesn't look great to me. He's got some odd habbits as well, such as making saves with the arm the oppossite side of the body to which the ball has gone. For example, as hot over his left shoulder, he will often reach over his head with his right arm. They rave on about Guzan in the US and I think they might be right. He or Deadwoods' choice, Adler, would be much better options in my opinion.

Guzan can't get a work permit. Adler is class, but have we been linked to him?

We must have been watching different lads named Amelia--he has great reflexes, solid and intelligent positioning, very good anticipation; what he doesn't have is a solid defensive line.

What really struck me about his performances against us (and it's why I'm so keen on him) is that he didn't make any spectacular saves, or at least hardly any. He anticipated everything so well that chance after promising Spurs chance ended up with him easily catching a ball, simply because he put himself in the right place.

He was reliability personified, calmly and inconsipcuously snuffing out everything we threw at him. It was driving me nuts as I watched the first leg, as I initially blamed it on lack of imagination from Spurs, but it wasn't - it was just incredibly good goalkeeping.

I think too many people judge players generally and goalkeepers especially by their high-profile errors and individual bad decisions. Contrary to what several people have posted above, I'd much prefer a 'keeper who kills off 12 opposition chances in every match through good positioning, even if he does something horrendous once a month, to a 'keeper who makes potentially routine saves look like acrobatic ones, even if he is "reliable".

Looking at your location, i'd say we are probably watching the same games on FSC. The last times Amelia played on FSC, I'm pretty sure were against Inter and Lazio. I know they showed the Milan game, but was injured for that one. Against Lazio he parried a shot straigth out in front of him, which is a cardinal sin for a GK, which allowed Rochi to score. Also, the second goal from Pandev was very soft as he allowed the ball to bounce past him. Against Inter, one of Suazo's headers went through his legs! Like I said before, I watched Livorno just to seem him play and can only comment on those games. Livorno aren't a big name and FSC only tend to show the bigger sides, so we don't see them that often. But, from what i've seen he's not been anything special. If Robbo let a shot bounce past him, parried into a strikers path or let one through his legs, there would be a barrage of outraged posters on here.
