I picked up my support for the club because they were quite crap when I was young (Gerry Francis reign), so it's quite enjoyable seeing us nearer success over the years. We've had some ups and downs, but that does sort of add some interest to it.
I imagine it's worse supporting other teams. Liverpool fans are constantly bitter, as the massive majority will have started supporting them when they were a good team, but have suffered their mancunian neighbours constantly getting one over them. Man United fans will, for the most part, be glory supporters too and will be suffering. City fans will be perhaps now expecting to win every game, so will be full of anger and frustration when they don't win every game. Chelsea fans start the season expecting to win a competition, and will be constantly miffed at things like drawing to Burnley, or getting slammed by Bradford. Arsenal fans will be suffering for the last 10 years after gloating for so long with their short period of domination.
West Ham fans are deluded and are no where near the next level. They're having one of their best seasons but are still in a big old mood.
In my case I have never thought of it as being nutty, in fact I have never questioned my loyalty. I am a third generation supporter, my grandad first started following the Club in the 1930s, he passed on that love for the Club to my father, he attended games throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He took me to my first game in 1967 and needless to say I started my own love affair with the Club that is still ongoing.
Of course, there have been times and continue to be times when it becomes extremely frustrating to watch this great Club but that goes with the territory. I could never see a time in my life where I lose interest sufficiently to turn my back on them, they are my Club, my family's Club and as much part of my life and important to me as my family. We have shared many of the best and most important events in the Club's history, the good times and the bad times but always kept our faith and belief that there will be more good times to come and our support and loyalty is therefore unwavering.
I used to get so pissed off when we lost I'd play the same fixture but on FIFA and fucking drill the team just to make me feel better... I still do it occasionally
Are you saying we are nutty to support them because we don't win a trophy every year or for some other reason? You remind me of Rick from the Young Ones using the word "Nutty".
Aside from Spurs in football I'm also a fan of Northampton Saints in rugby. For anyone who doesn't follow rugby, Northampton have become bloody good in recent years and last May I was at Twickenham to watch them finally become Champions of England. As I watched their celebrations and drank to toast the victory with my Dad and my brother, I found myself thinking, 'So, this is what it feels like to be the best. To be champions. To have realised a dream'. And it actually felt a little hollow. The only way is down, and fans of Northampton Saints know this better than most as they were relegated not long after being European Champions in 1999.
So my answer is that we're either:
a) Not nuts at all, as the greatest joy in being a sports fan is actually the pursuit of glory, be it relative or otherwise, rather than the slightly hollow realisation of it, and ours is a club that has a habit of screwing up at the perfect moment to keep glory just out of reach; or
b) We're no more nuts than any other football fan as we're all essentially condemning ourselves to cyclical stress and varying degrees of disappointment and heartache.
They've caused me more heartache in the 40 years that I've been supporting them than anything else throughout my life.
However, apart from my wife, sons and family they've also given me the most joy.
Nothing nuts about living ones life with that philosophy, all from a football club that inspired me by doing he same on the pitch. It's supporting them for the other 30 years that is certifiably underpants on head...
Supporting this club drives you to become nuts. You are pretty sane before you embark on the rollercoaster ride that is following Tottenham Hotspur. The false dawns, the missed opportunities, the great game changers that have graced our teams are all that makes you so proud to say "I'm a Spurs fan"
