Was chatting to wooderz during half time at the lane tonight and we both commented on the hamstring injuries our players keep getting.
VdV seems to be a regular thing and has had problems with them for months and King can't be counted as he barely trains but with Lennon two weeks ago, Defoe a few weeks back, Sandro, Gallas and Parker all picking up strains to their hamstrings in the past few weeks, is there something missing from our training/stretching program?

Sandro and Gallas have calf injuries, most likely due to overuse.

In King's case when you dont train on a regular basis and put your body through a full 90 you're bound to pick up injuries. However, it hasnt been his groin (which kept him out for most of last season) its been the swelling of his knees which we all know cant get through 2 games in a week. But the club have done all they can be only making him training the day before a game so theres not much we can really do with him other than that.

VDV seems to be alright so far, think the club might have adjusted his training routine.

But all these injuries are coming at a period where we've been relying on the same players and not given them much time to recover.

What Kendall said. I can understand the difficulty in changing a winning side, especially when we were on a long winning streak but it has cost us. Parker is the obvious example, he was crying out to have a break, he's looked jaded for weeks and we had opportunities to give him a game off but we didn't and he picked up an injury.

The Sandro injury is also frustrating as he'd gone from not playing at all to having to play loads of games in a row in a compacted schedule and it probably caused an issue.

I don't know if there is an issue with our squads fitness or stretching as such, we have a lot of very good athletes and haven't they introduced yoga or something to the training schedule (anyone who has tried it knows the benefits). To me it is simply that we have tried to rush players back quickly (VDV) or overplayed them due to not wanting to change what isn't broken.

I still don't understand how players can't cope with playing two games per week. How would they cope if they had a real job?

In fairness, all the players pulling up with minor strains or tears are the ones that have done it consistently over the course of their careers.

I'm not saying our approach to reintegration has been perfect by any means, but we've had little choice in fairness. Actually once you go past the best 8 players or so, we start to look a little thin and so rotation, while maintaining good results, is very risky - especially against a team where we HAD to pick up three points.

Defoe - has had the occasional niggle over the course of his career and we know he worked hard over the summer
Gallas - has always been in and out for us
Sandro - his calf has been a recurring problem this year
Rafa - an injury prone player
Lennon - similarly, frequently in an out with muscle tears

But it is a little worrying. We have a week off, and you'd hope Livermore will be fine pretty soon, but essentially we're without our first four DMs at present - no Parker, Sandro, Hudd or Livermore.

In anyone's book that's pretty unlucky

Nothing to do with our training \ physios, come on we are a Premiership outfi and would have recruited the best in the field. Some players are more prone to injuries than others, bar Hudd we haven't had a long term injury this season.

Theres a fine balance between rotation and playing a settled side. Benitez rotated for rotation sake, Harry doesnt seem to like to use the subs in games.
I've said before - Ferguson is the only one who seems to be able to utilise a squad of players so they look 'match-fit' when being bought into the first 11.

The FA Cup game has come at a good time it seems

Totally agree, he's the absolute master in that respect.

There are so many times that we've played them without a number of what you'd consider their first XI, and yet they beat us every f*cking time.

I don't know how he does it, but when they bring players in they seem to maintain their levels of performance extremely well. When we change players, our creativity really seems to suffer, and yet they still pick teams apart.

Massive respect

How many times has Van Persie pulled a hammy?

You're seriously using Van Persie, the man made of glass to illustrate your point?

To answer your question, about 3 times. Including this time last year.

How can it be a consequence of overuse, when they are two of the most underused players this season?

Some of our players such as, Kaboul, Walker, BAE, Modric, Bale, Ade have been playing practically in all of our fixtures this season and they havn't had such problems due to overuse.

Whilst here, does anyone know why Lennon and Dawson did not make the bench last night? In Dawson's case, he was on the bench for the game at Swansea but he was absent yesterday. I just hope they have not suffered a setback in their recovery. We badly need to get players fully fit and quickly for the fast approaching difficult fixtures .

Lennon - maybe he's just not ready yet
Dawson - I'm guessing they only felt the need for one CB on the bench, and that attacking options were more valuable?

Yeah. Harry never completely rests a team when we've got other competitions.

No, he never plays the kids in the Europa League or the Carling Cup.

Yep. Not a clue what he's doing.

Never makes subs either. Van der Vaart never complains about always being substituted.

Yes I am, because he has played more games than any of our lot this year but by some logic should have been rested 'x' amount of times because that's what managers should do.

Doubt either Gallas or Sandro will be back much before end of Feb - Sandro's looked a bit worse than Bill's though...
