Completely though I agree, even granting they're really offended risks giving them too much ground - they're really feeling a greedy glee the at prospect of validating their egos, in relation to this real heavy duty 'moral' stuff, which they're then able to pass off as being offended, by using language which society finds so weighty that duty makes us respond in their terms.

The habitual dishonesty actually serves a similar ego validating purpose I think, in a different way: by consciously lying they give themselves wiggle room, nothing has to fit together quite exactly for the moral rush to be achieved. I say it's another example of false entitlement to make stuff up and have people respond as if you've provided something substantive. The pattern becomes clearer. None of Andros' male friends did this. It's contemptuous to expect us to respond to your imaginings as if they were or histories or logical analyses
