I always knew he wasn't just a pretty face.

Iain Dowie's actually has a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering.

Made me laugh when he mis-pronouced 'archaic' on MOTD2 on Sunday and was corrected

But not done too bad for a dimwit

The classic Beckham joke is:

Beckham gets a black cab from Heathrow:

Cabbie:......Hello Becks. Been anywhere nice ?
Beckham:...Yeah New York
Cabbie:......What did you get up to ?
Beckham:...Went to a lovely restaurant but I can't remember the name
Cabbie:......I know NY really well. Give me an idea
Beckham:...Well it's a London Station
Cabbie:......Waterloo ?
Beckham:...No
Cabbie:......Paddington?
Beckham.....No
Cabbie:.......Victoria ?
Beckham:.....Yes that's it. [turns to his left] Victoria what was the name of that restaurant ?

I think one of the most intelligent footballer ever was the one and only Pele. His footballing genius everyone knows about. Though born to poverty and had little formal schooling, he has mastered the English language in a short while to the extent that he could talk intellignetly in interviews and at international forums as Brazil's Minister of Sports and later as a goodwill ambassador for football.

Whoever said Joey Barton is thick is bang wrong - a massive arsehole, sure, but whenever I've heard him interviewed he spoke articulately and at length about football, it's place in the grand scheme of things and his own problems. Came across very reasonable and, though it's hard to believe, likeable. I think he's just got a fuse so short that he spends more time in a violent rage than being "himself", who is actually a decent person.

What baffles me is how someone like Ashley Cole can struggle to string a sentence together yet show immense intelligence on a football pitch - and he does .

Listening to Alec Ferguson at Bobby Robson's memorial service it was patently obvious that the guy is highly intelligent and erudite .

Pat Nevin interrupted his degree to go pro - and used to read Turgenev on the team coach.
