Here's the story, by Rob Beasley:

HARRY REDKNAPP leans back in his manager's chair, hands clasped behind his head, misty-eyed for a moment.

An impressive collage poster depicting Tottenham legends through the years is responsible. It's clearly a memory-jerking reminder to Redknapp of the club's glorious past. But it's also a painful reminder of how low Spurs have since fallen.

Which is why he takes no great pride in having saved the White Hart Lane faithful from the ignominy of relegation. And why he burns with a desire to bring back those great, unforgettable glory, glory days.

"It's not rocket science," shrugs Redknapp. "I just got players in the right slots playing in the right positions. This is a huge club, a great club and it should be up there competing with and pushing the very best. The potential here is tremendous and I have got big ambitions."

Before addressing the future, 'Arry Boy prefers a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane to when he was in his teens and Tottenham were winning the Double - 1961 for those too young to know, let alone remember!

He shakes his head in wonder: "What about that great Double-winning side? Some of them were here the other day - Bobby Smith, Dave Mackay, Terry Medwin, Maurice Norman, Mel Hopkins.

"And I'll never forget John White. What a player he was and so tragic that he was killed so cruelly and so young."

Scottish star White, a key player in that revered '61 side, was struck by lightning on a golf course in Enfield aged just 27.

"There have been some unbelievable players here down the years, some great names," Redknapp recalls. "Jimmy Greaves, Alan Gilzean, Glenn Hoddle, Gary Lineker, Gazza . . . it was always such a wonderful club like that. But in recent years there's been something missing. They've lost their way a little.

"I really want to try get this club back to how it was, put us back to where we think we should be. And if I can get the three players I want in the summer I think we will have a terrific team that can really push on next season.

"I reckon it will take £30million to get them and I'll have to balance the books by selling four or more. But we have a good squad that can become a terrific squad with the right additions. So while it might be the end of the season there's still a definite buzz around the place.

"We are building a new stadium, a new training ground, so the club is on the move. And this team can get better and better."

Redknapp's remarkable rescue act proves that. When he took over in late October, Spurs were mired in the bottom three with just two points from eight games.

But wins over Bolton, Liverpool and Manchester City and a draw at Arsenal garnered 10 points from 12 and Tottenham were on the rise. So much so that a Europa Cup place is still mathematically possible if Fulham foul up against Everton this afternoon.
Redknapp admits: "When I took over we were rock bottom. We could not have gone any lower. But I honestly never thought we would go down even though things were so bad and had been for some time.

"People remember the start of the season but the rot had set in the season before, oddly enough after Spurs won the League Cup.

"I think it was just three wins out of 20 after that, which is real relegation form. But I was convinced I could turn it around.

"That's why I agreed to come in - although I took a big gamble, to be honest. The contract I've got here is no longer than I had at Portsmouth and financially it's no better either.

"But I was in the comfort zone at Portsmouth. It was too easy for me - I felt I'd taken the club as far as I could. I wanted to push myself, test myself. At my age I knew it could be my last chance to take over at such a big club.

"I'd turned down Newcastle last season and if I didn't take this one then . . . who knows? I just saw it as a challenge. A massive club but a club that had been under-achieving for too long. I just couldn't resist having a go."

And Redknapp wasted no time in getting to grips with what he deemed to be wrong - including the off-field antics of some of his stars.

"The players were told a few home truths," he says. "I told one or two of them that they had reputations as Jack-the-lads who were more interested in putting it about than putting it in on the pitch."

After reading the riot act to the players, Redknapp went to work on lifting the gloom and doom around the club - and especially the Chigwell training ground.

"We've made it a far more relaxed atmosphere here now," he says. "I'm the same with everyone whether it's one of the players, the girl on reception or the tea lady. Everyone's on level terms here, all part of the same team."

But with all due respect to the tea lady, she was never going to save the club from the dreaded drop was she? So it must be good news for Spurs fans that at 62 Redknapp's love for the game is a strong as ever.

"As long as I'm happy and getting good results I'll keep going," he adds. "I mean, what else would I do? What else could I do? "I like the occasional game of golf, walking my dogs on the beach, going out for a meal.

"But I've told the chairman in two years' time we'll have a really terrific team and I want to be here at the helm enjoying it."

Redknapp is facing another injury crisis for today's trip to Anfield. Benoit Assou-Ekotto (knee) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin) are doubts and Ledley King faces a late test on his knee.

Tom Huddlestone, Jamie O'Hara, Michael Dawson, Aaron Lennon and Adel Taarabt are still out while Wilson Palacios is on compassionate leave.

The only bright note for Spurs is the return of Darren Bent after a knee injury.

3 in 4 out if he gets who he needs. Interesting that he says it will take £30 mill for all 3 players, who could they be?

Good to see that he is talking so positive about what he wants to achieve for us. He says that this is a big club with massive potential -we really know that actually- and he wants to put us back up there at the top where we belong.

In two years time he said, thats how much time is needed to achieve his aim. If he can get us there in that time, I will be very very pleased and so so happy. After all we have been hoping for so long haven't we ?

Thing is, do we believe that he can get us there as he says he will ? Difficult to answer that one isn't it ? But, we have to trust and believe in him and he needs all the effort and commitment from the players if he's to reach his goal.

will it be an even 10 mil spread on three players or something like 20mil on one and 5 on two others?

I was just thinking about that, I think it makes us less likely to spend £20 million on me player. You don't get much for £5 mill now. Harry may end up having to pay a bit more than he thinks though, if we get them at all.

Harry is very good when it comes to his interviews, really knows what to say. I for one believe him and trust in his ability to get us where we should be. Just look what he did for Portsmouth with a shoe string budget and he has already done wonders for us with the signings of Palacios, Defoe and Keano.

On another note, I once heard Harry speak at a Charity dinner a few years back and he was absolutely brilliant, he had everyone in stitches with his good sense of humour and stories. He is a cracking bloke and hopefully he can be the manager who can take us to the Top 4!!

Pav and Hutton stay.

OUT : Bentley, Zokora agreed  and  Bent, Taarabt, Gilberto, Rocha, Dos Santos, Boetang and Chimbonda. Those should give us enough dosh to make up for the spending and maybe leave us with a little in the balance as well

I feel it'd be a mistake to sell dos Santos on already - it's not like he cost us much to begin with. Nor do I think it'd be wise to sell our top scorer. The rest I agree with though, they've served their purpose and should be moved on.

My opinion on these transfers changes almost as much as the weather now, 3 players, right today i'm gonna go with Scott Brown as that sounds just about done already from alot of sources, Djbril Cisse on a year long loan and possibly Glenn Johnson so Harry can use Corluka in the centre of defence and Midfield if needed at any point. With Johnson now able to play on thr right side of midfield he's versatility could be a good asset aswell as Corluka's.

Oh it wasn't a list of who I want to go necessarily, just of who I think looks likely to get the chop. Bentley and Zokora have clearly fallen dramatically from grace. As for Pav v Bent, Bent would get more money in and may well not be as good a footballer, but Bent is also proven as able to score goals in this league, Pav isn't, and if we sign a new number 9 Bent's EPL goalscoring experience could prove invaluable during the inevitable "bedding in" period where a new striker might be inconsistent at first.

As for Hutton, I say him on the basis that we don't need 3 right backs, Coluka is a better player and Hutton would raise a fair bid more than Chimbonda, while Chimbonda is still a useful player to have at the club. Just thinking in terms of fee's, Bentley would fetch around 11, Pav around 8, and Hutton about 5 each, giving us about 30m for 3 new players.

Taarabt, Gilberto, Rocha and Boateng will fetch chicken feed between them. Gilberto and Rocha probably nothing at all, maybe a million at most on Taarabt and maybe 2 for Taarabt. As for Giovani, he had a very good loan spell and I'm hoping that it proves enough to earn him a future with us.

As for in: I'm hoping for a little bit better than Brown, Cisse and Johnson if 30m is what we're shelling out.

I reckon it will be Brown, Johnson and Jones unfortunately. Even though i dont see the point of getting johnson and jones but brown would be a great addition.

Very good reasoning there M8.

Though I'm not so sure that Pav will be shipped out, not after what I read lately where Harry was quoted as saying to Pav (after Man.C.) to prepare himself for next season to come back and score a score (20) - to which Pav replied ''No Problemsovski.''

That is why I came to that conclusion, you see
