Inverted wingers. Working for us?

Original discussion: Aaron Lennon.

I was actually wondering, while everyone is bemoaning the fact he doesn't beat his man, run to the line and all that, his defensive efforts go relatively ignored - he's actually quite solid tracking back and hassling wingers himself, so perhaps we have an emergency right back that we never knew. Considering his small stature, he does do a magnificent job of simply being in the way when required.

I think he should have been put on the right today when he came on, that was the side the danger was coming down towards the end. Naughton getting overloaded completely and a tired Lamela just couldn't cope with the job of getting back in and helping out.

He's not a winger. He's a defensive wide player.
I think you'll find he is classified as a winger. who else in our team could you call a proper winger? I think you will find lennon is the only proper winger we have.

I think you'll find full-backs with more attacking threat than him. He WAS a winger. For the past two seasons he's been picked for his ability to track back and defend. He offers nothing offensively. Maybe a bit of pace if you're lucky but he doesn't take anybody on anymore and never had end product anyway.

When he came on for Eriksen, it was the first time in a looooooooooooooong time I was happy to see him play. His pace and ability to track back was a good boost ahead of the tiring Eriksen at a time when we had the lead. Try bringing him on when we're losing? No thanks.

Jesus, ain't that the truth. Can hardly even remember the last time he contributed anything in offense, aside from that one cross he had last season that was converted.

The reason Lennon is on the left is because ideally, when Poch's system is setup to work, the AM's are inverted with the width provided by the wingbacks. This isn't just a problem with Lennon, it's that the whole system is struggling to really get going.

On the left he has to look up, come inside and pass. On the right he can't do any of those things.
Will become (hopefully) a better player for having to think about what he is doing more.

He's a defensive wide player who was useless defensively today.

Offers nothing anymore. Was hopeful for him after his preseason contributions but he's just not good enough. Never progressed the way we hoped.

Lennon has just got to go ASAP. Thank God for Chadli, or Eriksen and Lamela would have nothing to ping in any counterattacks. We have got to have some more pace in the attacking positions to couple Chadli.

Inverted? And what does that achieve do you think? (Especially in relation to lennon)

I really don't want to come across as condescending here, especially on NLD day, but does "inverted winger" honestly have to be explained, especially considering our setups of the last two seasons?

In relation to Lennon, 'bout fuck all. Hence why my above post that he needs to go. He's done absolutely nothing contributory to attack whatsoever. But as for inverted wingers as a whole, coupled with added width through wingbacks, they cause more problems through the middle ideally. Problem is, before today, we've not played a transitional player in the holding two so as to give them that added space to work with (we've been so predictable and meandering, it's been extremely easy for opposition sides to shut down our supply lanes).

Didn't understand the sub today.

Was ideally to provide more pace and a bit more defensive edge, as well as fresh pace for the possible counter.

Of course, it only served to provide yet another case for why Lennon has become so ultimately useless. He has just got to go as soon as we can move him on for an upgrade. We need the change, and I think he could use the change in scenery at this point. He rather clearly seems to just not at all be interested on a pitch anymore.
