There are quiet a few on Spurscommunity that would prefer 4th place over winning a cup because it brings in more money and their logic goes that more money means more what ... cups????

More money for Spurs means more money for the major shareholers who will be long gone in a few years on the back of inflated share prices.

Personnaly I would prefer to see trophies continueing to roll in.

Apologies if there has already been a recent poll.

This is already beng debated in "Londons most successful Team", but it will be interesting to see the results of the poll. BTW I voted for trophies.

AS plainly as I can put it.

I was saying that the carling cup win was awesome, however, it doesn't necessarily improve us, because it doesnt generate that much money and isnt as high profile.

To continue improvement, we need to challenge the top four to be int he CL year after year to generate the money and the profile to continue improvement and keep challenging with the best in europe/world.

Money offers improvements, stadium, players, wages...

Money and sucess = ideal.

I think id take top 5 over a cup win. as great as wembley was, finishing top 5 means you are a consistently good team rather than a cup run. the league doesnt lie, if you win it its because your the best team, the same applies if you finish 5 or wherever.

obviously winning a cup aswell is the best answer!!

Trophies

listening to goons trying to justify not replacing experince by spending big, saying they've made so much money net and that Chelsea and Lveirpoola dn UTD and us etc have spent so much more blah blah... But in the last 3 seasons they've all won things. How long will they bleet out the same crap after not winning anything 5 years? a decade? longer.

Is all about the trophies baby. However finishing 4th gives you a shot at the biggest club trophy of all, so wanting to finish 4th might not be about money for some people. It might just be about wanting to win that throphy.

I would certainly aim for 4th over CC at the start of the season but as the season has evolved I'm overjoyed we won the CC. I hope UTD do the double so we've won more than pool, chavs and goons this year.

Alas in hte short term when league position and TV rights are taken into account this is not the case.

each league position is worth an extra £1 or £2 million

and if a team is successful in the group stages then the Champions League does bring in substantially more TV money than the UEFA,

in money terms Spurs are around 15th in the world despite not winning many trophies in the past 15 years but it could be argued that it is the long history of glory (now 25 major trophies won) and playing attractive football that has Spurs fans in every corner of the globe which in the very long term means more money and continued success for Spurs.

I choose goat, cos there was a goat option, but it's all about trophies at least if we win more than scum, though CL footie would still be priority on regular basis

You've phrased the question wrong. Or rather you've misunderstood the significance of fourth. Ask a Spurs fan if he want fourth for it's own sake and for just one year and he'd tell you no. What we want is to be the best in the country. We're not going to go from being where we are now to the best in one step. The journey will take us through fourth place and then hopefully top three before we reach the pinnacle.

Winning the cup is fantastic and not to be under-estimated but it is a side-show to the ultimate dream. That's why fourth signifies so much more than a cup win and that's why it should be our major ambition next year and every year until we're regular achievers.

It always used to be about trophies, but now it's about money.

As any businessman will tell you, you have to spend money to make money.

So continual top 4 finishes will bring in loads of extra cash, which will bring success.

Hence Ramos asking for shite loads of cash today.

I voted 4th myself. Reason being is that continued runs in the Champions League will obviously bring in much more revanue which could help to fund a new stadium. New stadium = more revanue but also a CL spot means we can then attract the top World Class players to the Lane and with all that together, it should = TROPHIES anyway. It's obviously no guarantee for success but it's a good a platform as your ever likely to get imho.

Trophies of course, but better trophies than the fizzy pop cup.

Both tend to go hand in hand though.

Trophies everyday. Surely every fan wants to see their team win something. Of course competing at the highest level possible is a must, but winning a trophy is something else. Otherwise we'd be Newcastle or West Ham.

Sustainable success (=cups=glory) in the game today requires the revenues you get from being in the CL.

You can't attract the right players without participation and the wages it enable.

Top 4 finish is an enabler to win the cups.

Lets say the club won the Carling Cup 2-3 times in the next 10 years but consistently remained 6th or 7th in the league and never qualified for the Champions league, would I be happy with our lot? NO WAY!
Our club has made progress in the last few years and has created forward momentum among the players and the fans.If we can't step up to a Champions league spot in the next 2-3 seasons that momentum will be lost,we have the right chairman,we have the right manager,we have the money and we have some of the players! We need a few more very good players,we need a new stadium and we need Champions league football to sustain our growth - not Carling cups!

Sustained qualification. Just like we did when we got Uefa cup.

Gradually progressing as a club & challenging for cups, whilst being able to attract the best players with our new found status.

Where did Everton get with their 4th? Nowhere! Where is the extra money? Spent. Bet their fans would like to have a Cup in their dusty trophy cabinet.

Where did Newcastle get with their (was it) 2nd? Nowhere! Where is the extra money? Spent. Bet their fans would like to have a Cup in their very dusty trophy cabinet.... if they still have one!

Where did Jol get with his progress of two 5th place finishes, one of them a 4th place robbed by the kiss of a virus? Nowhere but the door.

Spurs are already a very wealthy club. The money of the Spurs fans make sure of that. The money from the shareholders is an investment that expects a monetary return. The money from Spurs fans expects a glorious return.

A trophy winning team will attract fans and players and in turn will continue to keep Spurs as one of the wealthiest clubs in the world.

Still 3rd or 4th would be nice, as long as it's followed by a Cup (UEFA or Champions) win of course.
