Is the galacticos era coming to a close?

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but it seems to me that this may be the twilight of the never-to-be-lamented galacticos era. You know, these last 10 or so years, when teams of ludicrously expensively assembled mercenaries (both players and managers) ruled the world.

While the majority of the press still clings to the idea of the greatness of their beloved billionaire demigods, the last season(s), as well as the euros, seem to support the idea that the old concept of building a "team" with complimentary skills and with players who sort of, well, play a particular role with some discipline, seems to be producing results.

Of course the media will continue to think differently, in particular promoting the concept of manager-gods who by their force of will and personality, will lead their teams to greatness. You know, those "born winners" like van Gaal, rather than "perpetual second raters" like Ranieri.....and it continues this year, with a slew of (often self-proclaimed) Olympian Zeus's coming in for inevitable world-dominating success, like, say Klopp last year, who led the might Pool back to the heights which are their divine right...um...

Anyway, am I just dreaming, that things might be changing for the better...

Been thinking for a while that it's about time clubs woke up and realised that spunking hundreds of millions isn't a guarantee of success anymore.
Lesser clubs aren't as scared of them as they once were.

I find it amusing that the media always predict the league in line with spend each summer. The fact is that most players take at least a season to bed in, and its extremely rare that a player hits the ground running - they may have an initial spurt, but they tend to be second season before they gain consistency.......Spurs have found this the hard way, having had years of constantly changing teams, now we have a settled squad and it's paying dividends.

Look at Danny Murphy today - predicts utd, city and chavs as the far distant top 3 based on nothing more than the huge amounts they've spent.......no taking into account new managers and vastly umsettled squads. Personally, i think all three could bomb badly this season, but could be immense the season after.
P.S. has there evere been a bigger numpty as a pundit than Murphy?

Are you familiar with a certain Mark Lawrenson?

The transfer window has become big news unfortunately. Both as a viewing number driver and a bookie driver.
Sky are the devil unfortunately. They have an interest in both so, in my opinion, are dangerously bias. They can report transfer news to increase Internet hits and at the same time, increase betting income.
What's to stop them over exaggerating how close deals are?
Without transfers they have nothing to report, so why not drum up news and make it happen?

It's nice to think we don't have to sell. But if Madrid come in for our player of the year in 12 months, with a record bid, once that players head is turned he's out the door almost as quickly as they can sell scarfs with his name outside the Bernabeu. Same for most players/clubs. And then we start again.

There needs to be a balancing of the force in football.
The Reals, Barca's and United's can't just be the default clubs that ravage the rest of the worlds best talents.
At one point in the 90's it was almost as if every team in the PL was just a training ground for United who could pick and take whomever they liked at will.
That can't be allowed to happen. I actually think the money that has come into football, first through billionaire owners then through tv has helped bring competetiveness back just by offering more choice of teams.

The competition for that crown is extremely hotly contested!

I'd like to think so, and last season would suggest it, but time will tell. Been so used to things going one way it's hard to accept they might go another, especially as it might be positive!
