I agree with you, L7. Carrick would possibly bring the best out of Bent, so we wouldn't need to find a 'new Berbatov', although that would be nice. Obviously we'd need another good striker but we might not have to break the bank bringing in an established superstar.

Like you said, it really doesn't matter anyway, Carrick wont come back. United need him more than they need Berbatov (in my opinion), with Ronaldo on track for over 40 goals this season, and Tevez and Rooney both likely to top 20 the really don't have much of a problem in that department.

It's a good point when you put it like that. Maybe the agent, people and press of Bulgaria are more keen on Berba at ManUSA than than SAF would be.

Berbatov has the talent but not the attitude to make it as a Man Utd player.

Personally I think it would soften the blow of losing Berbatov, especially under Ramos who will load the width and strikers with a tad more dynamism than Jol (that’s’ no slight on Jol more shift in buying structure and ethic). The decision on Carrick wanting to leave UTD may be made for him. If utd are publicly willing to let him go he may feel unwanted and would prefer to be away. The goons could want a piece but UTD wouldn’t sell to them. Chelsea and Pool are well stocked for that role so us, Everton and Newcastle become the most likely moves for him. I suspect Newcastle would be his choice rather than go back to us although UTD would only want to sell him because it would increase their chances of getting Berbatov.

Someone commented on Carrick’s seemingly low assist count. Other than the excellent work he did protecting the back four, his yet to be replaced ability on the near post for defensive set pieces and his possession retention, Carrick’s main attacking contribution was to feed the player who then got the assists. Secondary assists are rarely counted so his direct contribution to goals was higher than opta gave him credit for. It’s also true that he grew into his role and got more confident and pivotal and when you look at his performance especially in the second Ar5ena1 game that season it’s not hard to imagine how awesome he could be.

Just imagine how SAF would take to a Berbs sulk?

He put up with plenty from Eric "I'm an existentialist philosopher" Cantona.

And when Sheringham did his best hands on hips primadonna impression, it was Roy Keane who sorted him out, not SAF.

That was when SAF was a young man in his early fifties. He won't put up with it now. Can you imagine Berbs and Rooney together?

A proper pair of pretty petulant -- probably prolific -- poachers.

I think SAF has actually mellowed as he's got older, putting more layers in between himself and the players. Rather than having to administer the hairdryer himself, I suspect SAF increasingly relies on senior players - such as the afore-mentioned Keane - to enforce team discipline and standards. After all, SAF is pretty red-faced just walking five steps up to the Manure dugout...

And on the subject of Berba's alleged "petulance", it's nothing compared to the way Henry conducted himself in his last couple of goon seasons.

Carrick is the one player I miss and everytime I have watched him playing for United he has been fabulous!
I watched the Roma game tonight and thought he was the best player on the pitch. He makes the game look effortless and that is the mark of real genius a bit like Berbatov!
One of the main problems we have as a team is that too many of our players are 'ball watchers' who don't see danger until it is too late!
If you watch Michael Carrick - when he is 20 or 30 yards away from the player with the ball,he is constantly looking around him to see where the danger might come from, thats why he is brilliant at intercepting passes and crosses!
I would honestly take Carrick instead of Berbatov any day of the week because he sets the tempo for the whole team, he is a fantastic passer of the ball and is more of an asset in defence!
I reckon that the reason he left was because Utd players, under the orders of Alex Ferguson, turned his head during the World Cup!
Would he come back to us,who knows?

Yeah, and I bet Berbs couldn't be arsed to kung-fu kick anybody in the crowd, so SAF would have one less thing to worry about!

And he never praised his gooner teammates either, unlike Berbs who regularly does.

I'm certain he wouldn't. Why would he? Even if he lost his place in the first team, he'd probably sit on the bench determined to get it back. But reading your praise of his qualities, it makes me laugh how the Man U fans and Manchester press and media laughed at the asking price for him and said he wasn't worth it! Puh!

Basically, unless/until you play for them, they don't rate anybody. :duh:

I think we're reading too much into this. Quite clearly this is a straight swap between Old Trafford and Buckingham Palace. Prince Phillip is getting on a bit, I'm sure the Queen would be quite into some of the younger footballer types.
