The first out male player in England since the atrocious way Fashanu was treated, and only the second currently out male player in the whole world. Absolutely amazing stuff - so, so much love and solidarity to this young man.

"This season has been a fantastic one for me on the pitch. I’ve made my first-team debut, scored 30 goals for the youth team, signed my first professional contract and shared success with my team-mates, going on a great run in the FA Youth Cup and lifting the Lancashire FA Pro-Youth Cup.
But off the pitch I’ve been hiding the real me and who I really am. I’ve known my whole life that I’m gay, and I now feel that I’m ready to come out and be myself.
It’s a step into the unknown being one of the first footballers in this country to reveal my sexuality, but I’ve been inspired by Josh Cavallo, Matt Morton and athletes from other sports, like Tom Daley, to have the courage and determination to drive change.
In reaching this point, I’ve had some of the best support and advice from my family, my Club, my agent and Stonewall, who have all been incredibly pro-active in putting my interests and welfare first. I have also confided in my team-mates in the youth team here at Blackpool, and they too have embraced the news and supported my decision to open up and tell people.
I’ve hated lying my whole life and feeling the need to change to fit in. I want to be a role model myself by doing this.
There are people out there in the same space as me that may not feel comfortable revealing their sexuality. I just want to tell them that you don’t have to change who you are, or how you should be, just to fit in.
You being you, and being happy, is what matters most.
Jake

Blackpool Football Club has worked closely with Stonewall and the relevant footballing organisations to support Jake and is incredibly proud that he has reached a stage where he is empowered to express himself both on-and-off the pitch.
It is vital that we all promote an environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves, and that football leads the way in removing any form of discrimination and prejudice. "

Pleased for him that he’s been able to do this. Like David said must be a strong kid who knows his mind. Good for him.

Hopefully gives other players the courage to come out now, as by the law of averages there must be so many more gay players who haven’t felt the freedom to say so.

Obviously i understand why people sadly feel the need to hide their sexuality in professional sports but it does astound me that we are in 2022 and we are having pretty much the first openly gay footballer.

on the balance of probability there must be hundreds of gay footballers hiding their true selves in plain sight, very sad when you think about it.

it’s not the 80s anymore.

my tuppence anyway.

Happy for the lad, I hope he goes on to have a successful career.

It's a shame a 17-year-old coming out as gay has to be headline worthy, but sadly that's the world we live in. I hope he inspires a lot of his peers, and this helps send the message that it's OK to be yourself.

Good on him. Such a brave kid to do this in this macho sport. I’m hoping doing this in the lower leagues will make it an easier journey for him rather than the craziness of PL or Championship. Fingers crossed he isn’t subjected to abuse.

Strong lad, 100% power to him. Shouldn't matter one bit, hopefully this is the way it starts not mattering anymore to the football community.

Sadly I think if anything it makes it harder.

A couple of homophobic pricks in a Championship game would get pretty quickly shut down.

Widespread homophobic chanting against a gay player would receive national condemnation and bans for any and all involved.

But some morons down at a non-league game will probably be ignored.

I expect he won't go out on loan next season.

Hopefully I'm wrong. But e.g. as a trans woman, I feel far far safer at Spurs than I would at 99% of non-league grounds.

Bigger balls than the premier league footballers who are living a lie. Right at the start of his career too - respect.

As others have said, this shouldn’t really be news but I guess it has to start somewhere for the stigma to be eradicated.

Good on the lad, massive thing to do and I can only wish him all the best.
I hope he has a good support network round him because after seeing Burnley fans doing Nazi salutes on Sunday, there are still plenty of idiots out there.

Mad that this is even news in 2022. Well done to the lad and the obviously positive environment at Blackpool that have allowed him to be comfortable doing so.

Good lad. I know the majority of football fans wouldn’t care less if they had a gay footballer at their club. What matters is ability and desire to do their best, not their sexuality. I hope his club back him completely.

I think people overrate other people in general. Especially football fans.

There is still a high percentage of absolute scum. People who go to football stadiums to fight other human beings, due to the simple fact that the other person is wearing a different colour of t-shirt.

Do you really think people like that would be tolerant of homosexuality?

Also, not meant to be a criticism of you personally but the old.... Never would have expected this in 2022 is over used.

Wouldn't have imagined there'd be a war in mainland Europe in 2022, or that they would consider using nuclear weapons or a recession or.....

People were scum 2000 years ago and nothing has changed. It's just what is socially accepted/not socially accepted that has changed.

Before a man could go to a football match and say anything he wanted, now if he does that, there is a real chance of a prison sentence. It doesn't mean those people are no longer nobs, it's just they are more worried about showing it in public.

Well, that's an optimistic outlook! :cautious:

What a fantastic, brave and mature lad, let’s hope it inspires other footballers to follow his lead and be themselves ?
