I'll be fuming if we sign him. May as well just scrap the academy if we do.

We've so many talented young midfielders in our development squad, lets give them a game before splashing out 10m on someone who won't get into our best X1.

People really seem to overrate the players in our academy. The step from the academy to the PL is massive. Who do you suggest we give a go in the first team from our academy? Carroll is there already and he gets a few minutes here and there but he hardly looks like a super talent, he looks like a decent player at best at the moment.

And Carroll is far and away the best when he is played with the Academy talents. There is just a level of unrealism that many supporters have about our youth prospects. When people seriously are talking about having Coulthirst, Coulibaly, and Kane as viable striking options. They may be someday, but if just one of them comes good, that will be incredibly fortuitous. Hell, Coulibaly can't even get any game time in the Italian Serie B. Odds are though that none of them will reach the standard we need. That's not a knock on our academy or our youth players, but it's really damn hard to be a good player.

As many have mentioned, Carroll needs a PL loan to see if he is deserving of regular game time. Of course a team like Swansea would be ideal, but as long as he plays regularly at a high level, then we can see what we have. But that shouldn't stop the club from signing young players who are already proven performers at a high level if the price is right.

McCarthy is a work in progress, i have a feeling with the way he plays he will get moulded into a Modricesque type, his 1 touch passing is excellent, has an eye for a cutting pass and moves into space, Wigan in the time he has been there won't have played players like Dembele and the Beast next to him, take some of the defensive responsibility away from him and get him to pass and move more ala Mods and we could have a very gifted player on our hands.

I think we would be more likely to sign Mcmanaman, who I rate more highly, especially if we intend to keep Bale through the middle next year.

At £14m-15m I think he'd be a good signing. Has all the tools to be a real midfield general.

I wouldn't worry about the price tag mentioned. I'd expect him to cost around half that. The clubs after McCarthy will be the more frugal types such as ourselves, Everton, and possibly Arsenal. None of us will get into a bidding war nor will we offer anything even remotely approaching £20m. McCarthy will start to push for a move if one does not appear to be forthcoming, and Wigan's bargaining position will be significantly reduced by virtue of their relegation. That said I expect that it'll be one for late in the window.

Would have been really happy with McCarthy up until a couple of days ago. Stylistically I think he's exactly the sort of player we could do with. However, it would feel a bit of a comedown now after having been strongly linked with the likes of Paulinho (a different type of midfielder admittedly but a class above nonetheless).

I'd like us to sign him really good prospect. But not for £20 million. This whole problem with British/Irish players they are so over priced. Yes McCarthy is a good prospect but realistically he is worth more than £8 million?
