I don't believe anything any footballer says when it's a question of leaving the club who currently pays them

I'd be suprised if he's still here next season, but not shocked

Yes I agree, I still remember Robbie Keane saying he wanted to stay at Spurs till the end of his career and the next minute he was (failing) at Liverpool

I think it's interesting that Vertonghen repeats in several different interviews that Spurs "have the players" (after loosing vs Arsenal), "we are better than this" "it didn't have to be like this" (after loosing vs. Benfica) etc.
He consistently leaves out any talk about manager and coaches, only talks about how good fellow players really are. Especially the "didn't need to be like this"-comment (referring that the players are good enough to get a different result) struck med as premeditated and with and underlying meaning. Honesty by hints and omissions?

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen admits that his club have not improved from last season as they battle to stay in the frame for a top-four Premier League finish.

Spurs were beaten 1-0 at home in the north London derby by Arsenal on Sunday, with a goal from Tomas Rosicky inside two minutes proving enough to secure victory for the visitors, who reignited their title bid.

It was a second Premier League defeat on the bounce for Spurs after their 4-0 loss at Chelsea and leaves Tim Sherwood's side fifth in the table and seven points behind Manchester City, who have three games in hand.

It would now be a tall order for Spurs to close such a deficit over their remaining eight league games and they look likely to miss out on the UEFA Champions League placings once again.

"I do not want to look at the table any more because the gap (to the top four) is very big," said Vertonghen.

"All four sides at the top are stronger than they were last year and we have stayed at the same level. If you see last season, then we did not improve.

"I think we do have the players to achieve Champions League (qualification) and I hope we can achieve it next year."

And the Belgium defender knows his club have little time to dwell on their missed opportunities against the Gunners as they have to face the second leg of their Europa League tie away to Benfica on Thursday night, in which they trail 3-1.

"Of course we are all disappointed but we will try to come back with some good results," Vertonghen said.

"It is difficult now but we have to (pick ourselves up) and go again."

Full-back Danny Rose also voiced his disappointment over the possibility of finishing outside the top four after such a positive start under new manager Sherwood.

"Once the manager took over in December, we were on fire and we have had a bad week where we have become detached from the top four and it is hard to take," Rose said.

"It is going to be very hard to break in this season. We might have to look to next season now, regroup and see what happens.

"Some of the games we have lost at home and drawn at home, it has been unacceptable - Tottenham of two or three seasons ago were beating these teams comfortably.

"It is something to look at and we're definitely disappointed that this season may go again without finishing top four.

"Against Arsenal is the best we have played in a very long time, but the difference between the top four and the teams below, is once they get a chance, they take it."

I agree with him that we've stood still and not progressed.

Jan won't be leaving this summer. Not for the amount of money Levy will be asking. Plus, IIRC he still has 3 years on his contract so he can't force a move until next summer. I think the same is true of Lloris.

Although, it's yet another reason why bringing in a recognised world class manager in Van Gaal is a must. Our top players are much more likely to want to stay around if they have someone in charge who has a long history of winning trophies. As a football player that's all a lot of these guys want to do - win trophies.

To my mind Vertonghen, and Lloris for that matter, now have a mistake just waiting to happen in them when they were very dependable last season. If they want to go then let them go but while they are drawing their wages from THFC they need to up their game again. Dishonest otherwise.

No...Our new managerial appointment will be far more important.

I personally won't waste my summer worrying about Jan or Hugo though i would love to have them both here next season ....but.. tbh, we don't have any player i would really waste my summer worrying about....i am spent and need a rest from all that shit.

He was fresh as a daisy in the 88th minute yesterday when he actually had to get himself out of a slightly tight situation

Strolled through the whole game yesterday and didn't influence it at all. The difference between him and Kaboul trying to make something happen was huge.....

He’ll be off quicker than you can say ’Daniel Levy' If the price and terms are right for both parties

Fine defender but great no. Has had a poor attitude this season, and if he wants to go at the right price, let him.

I'd rather he goes.
Been shocking the last 5 or 6 games, slow, clumsey and no passion.
Not what we need or want.

"The fans have been great to me and I'd love to repay them and do the very best for them.

"I want to play my part in trying to get us back into the Champions League - where we belong."

To be fair all reports and ITK suggest that until the tapping up got really bad, Bale was set on staying with us.

I don't get all this "look at how his face looks, he isn't happy/wants out". Some people just natrually have that look on there face. My mate's brother has a mean, angry looking face and most people are scared of him, but he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
