We need Jan fit for rotation. Kevin Wimmer deserves to keep his place at the moment.

Kyle Walker at centre back?? Think he did it in a friendly once. Could see him playing the position when he's older and wiser!

More likely Davies, who has played there for Wales recently (and us I think).

Who cares how tall CCV is - lack of height never affected Cannavaro...

Whoever Poch picks after Verts returns we need cover. We are an injury away from losing a balanced CB pairing and our only "recognised" striker. Before Verts got injured we had Vimmer, and he has stepped up seemlesly. It worries me that we have no like for like replacement if Toby or Vimmer get injured.

Next year in the Champions League rotation will be the order of the day.

I can also see 3 at the back becoming a more regular formation. Always try and play to your strengths.

Our defence and the depth of our defence, centre backs, full back and keeper is frankly ridiculous

We used to have Doherty in defence. and inversen up front.

People saying Verts would be lucky to come back blablabla.

Please wake up, Wimmer has played two league games for us. He has done well but come on.

Please keep cool. Vertonghen is the boss.

Actually, Wimmer has started 3 games, played in 4 total for 286 PL minutes compared to Jan's 23 matches and 2054 minutes

Comparing the two statistically, we aren't noticing a drop-off. And even though I think Vertonghen is the right choice, Wimmer is proving to be a damn good PL CB.

Not obviously.

I think Wimmer will still be getting plenty of starts
I think it's obvious at his stage

Wimmer has done well and proved himself an excellent back up but he's not been on Vertonghen's level

He makes far too many needless fouls and isn't as mobile

He's very good, he's done very well and we are very lucky to have him as part of our squad but when fit Vertonghen is part of the first choice cb partnership and to me it is obvious

I'm wondering if Bentaleb at CB is something worth trying in cup games till Jan comes back. I know CCV is highly rated but he doesn't seem tall enough to me. Anyone know what his height is? He looks 5.11 - 6ft to me and you really need to be around 6.2 to be a CB.
He is 6ft which is a little bit taller than Cannavaro, about the same height as Thiago Silva and just a little shorter than Godin and will probably grow a bit more too.

Don't forget the year Keano got injured and we only had Doherty up front, happy days.
Pochottino doesn't usually bring a player straight back into the side after an injury, Jan will come back on the bench and get half an hour or so then probably a start but not ninety minutes unless its in the EL.
I think he runs all the tests in training and doesn't rush players back beyond their fitness.

If Wimmer picked up an injury now, for example, I'd keep Dier where he is and slot Ben Davies in beside Toby.

Yes we'd lose rotating Danny with him for a bit but we'd manage because they have been rotated all season pretty much - if that makes sense.

I think Wimmer has slotted in well but he, as of right now, isn't on Jan's level, that's not to say he couldn't or won't get there one day. I have to say I find somebody thinking that we should try Bentaleb at CB because he's quite tall amusing.

This. Not to take anything away from Wimmer as he's done very well, but there is an obvious drop off between the 2, even though it isn't noticeable statistically. Jan is much more comfortable in possession, has more mobility, and just an overall better defender at this stage. I think Dier's presence has been huge in masking the drop off. Again, you cant take anything away from Wimmer as he's done very well in replacement, but we really do miss Vertonghen, not only for his footballing abilities but for his leadership as well. He's taken very well to the added responsibility of being vice captain. We need him back sooner rather than later. He is clearly first choice LCB. Wimmer is a very good deputy though and we are lucky to have such a good back up.

Do you seriously believe Verts in not in our best 11? WTF?

Once fit he as per every other player returning from injury needs to 'earn' his place back into the starting line up. Wimmer has been excellent and deserves to keep his place if he continues the way he has done so far.

Verts is a 1st XI player but prior to this season so were Mason and Bentaleb so does that mean now they're fit we should drop Dier and Alli? No it doesn't. Verts once fit will need to regain his match sharpness and be eased back into the team.

No I don't believe that. WTF.?
Verts will have to wait his turn on returning to the squad as Poch doesn't automatically put them straight back in the team.
Wimmer has been doing a very competent job and will IMO retain his place allowing for rotation etc Verts will probably come back in alongside Toby once fully fit and up to speed.
