Are you actually serious or are you just joking with us?

Really, i had to ask

You know Im serious, but from your response its clear you dont rate JJ, so before we argue about why I rate him and you clearly dont, lets just agree to disagree.

I don't think it would be a positive if JJ does leave. One reason for this is finding a replacement. People say we need a Lampard/Gerrard/Alonso type player but who exactly is that? Who is available to us at a realistic price and actually wants to come. VdV and Sneijder I think are out of reach, Barry has gone to Citeh. Ireland is staying at Citeh, Cahill and Arteta at Everton have been mentioned, they won't be going anywhere. If JJ was to go then Steven Defour would be my choice to replace him but even then you don't know how much time he will take to adapt to the EPL, but i think we could actually get him for a decent price and he is only 21.

We'd be absolute mugs to sale JJ or swap Bentley plus money for Young. Personally the midfield we have AL JJ WP LM is pretty good, with Bentley Hudd and Bale (Zokora in the back ground) all pushing, IMO our midfield is OK. I think we need strengthening up front with a would class target man, and another left back as cover to BAE.

Spot on there m8 although I don't rate JJ too much I can't see us getting a replacement that has EPL experience and better than him.

The thing for me is we want to break into the top 4 and I don't think JJ got the skills to take us there. I know its a team game but I feel he is the weak link. We need to take this step by step with players like JJ and Zoko we should finish in the top 6 and get into europe and once we're in, then we should look to replace them as we will have european football to attract better players than we've got with the hope to push for CL.

Hytner is a respected journo but does he actually say something here? It's so Villa-centric it's unbelievable - with so many assumptions. I cannot see Redknapp opting for Carew as a makeweight in the deal, he's a good player but highly injury prone. I'd be disappointed if we offered JJ and Bentley to Villa without something substantial to show for it. Why are we looking to support O'Neill anyway? They're rivals for the top 5.

I doubt we are offering JJ to villa.

Moreover if JJ doesn't want to go, and I suspect he won't, then that's the end of the matter anyway.

MARTIN O'NEILL has stepped up the £10million chase for Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas.

The Aston Villa boss wants the midfielder, 26, to replace Gareth Barry and is set to make a bid.
O'Neill is ready to make the England player his second signing this summer after the £12m recruitment of winger Stewart Downing from relegated Middlesbrough.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is not keen on selling Jenas but needs to raise money.
Ironically, Redknapp is desperate to land £30m-rated Villa winger Ashley Young but O'Neill will not entertain a player-cash swap.
Downing himself wanted assurances about the futures of Villa's big-name stars before his arrival.
He revealed: "The first thing I asked the manager was 'Are these players staying? Because I'd like to play with them'.
"His response was that the likes of Ashley Young will not be leaving because he is trying to build a squad."

I've no problem with this at all. I like Jenas a lot when he materialises and wouldn't want to see him go, but I fully expect that in dealing with O'Neill, we'll be quoting him a £40m pricetag on Jenas, therefore spouting the same arrogant mentalism that O'Neill likes to tout.

Let's all sit at the same table here, Martin.

As much as I hate Jenas, I hate Carew even more. Would ruin the season for me.

MON was saying Downing was 'a bargain' at 12m earlier this week. So, I'm not sure how JJ could go for less than him? He scores more goals, he works harder and plays in an area that Villa desperately need someone in.

I rate Downing but felt 12m was market value. I also think 12-14m would be JJ's market value. I'd be surprised if he went for less than that. Especially this summer.

Yep if a broken downing is 12mill then Jenas is minimum 15mill Id think.

I think this morning's story is a classic "paper talk" link. You can always tell when it starts with "so and so are preparing a bid".

how do they know that someone is preparing a bid?

Unless we have an uber CM already signed and sealed then selling Jenas would be really fucking idiotic thing to do, especially to a team competing directly with us for position.

This transfer window sucks so far... get rid of some decent squad players and get in no one!

A big problem I have with the ENglish press so far this window is that when quoting values of players they suggest we want to sign they put a huge price tag on them whilst under rating the value of players they link with moves away from our club.

While these values hold little weight in the real world they do go some way into shaping the perceptions of how much these players are worth.

As said already, if Glen Johnson is worth £17m then by no means can Hutton be valued at only 5 same with Jenas being rated as a £10m player whilst Downing left a relegated club for £12m already this window.

While one transfer is not linked to another and there may well be many other factors to determine fees involved, it does go some way to indicate current market values and acts as a point of reference.

I agree with BC that unless we have a much better replacement lined up (well already stamped) to fill Jenas' role in the squad we would be mad to let him go. Indeed even if we do he would still be valuable to us as a squad player if he were willing to raise his game at the challange and fight for his place in the team.

Selling to your rivials is foolish and unless Villa are going to offer us deals that benefit both parties we should refuse to do business with them. No way should we strengthen them whilst weakening our own squad.

Carew for Jenas is not a fair deal, they look as though they will refuse to allow Young to come to us and we should do like wise with people such as Bentley/Bent/Jenas.

As MON treats us about Young , so should we about Jenas in return .

10 mill ?...seems there is some truth in papertalk tending to suggest lower prices for our players . Why should that be ?

I'd only consider it if they gave us Young in exchange, and even then I'm a bit hesitant since I have my doubts about how lightweight our midfield would be with both Young and Lennon, and I'd be worried if we didn't have a very good replacement for JJ - ie someone who is NOT Vieira.
