Contractual clause means Allen can join Reds, but Spurs also keen.
Joe Allen WILL join Liverpool – thanks to a clause in his Swansea contract allowing him to go to a ‘big five’ club for £15million.
But new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who managed Allen at the Welsh side last season, is still hoping to reduce that fee after years of overspending at Anfield.
Rodgers reportedly gave his word to Swansea when he left for Merseyside in June that he would not try to poach any of his former players off them for at least a year.
But it is understood Allen has been the subject of a bid from Tottenham, who are ready to pay around £10m for the highly talented young Wales and team GB midfielder.
Swansea have indicated they are reluctantly ready to do business for their man, who begins his Olympics duty against Senegal on Thursday.
The matter is complicated though, by his contract.
It says he will be allowed to leave if Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal make a £15m bid.
But there is no mention of any other club so, potentially, Spurs can get him for a lot less than that.
SOURCE: The Daily Mirror
Dare we be the ones to say it, but since when were Liverpool a top 5 club? Top 8, yes. Top 6, perhaps – with some persuasive argument.
Nit-picking aside, the source appears adamant that Brendan Rodgers will eventually get his man. The Northern Irish tactician has made a reunion with Joe Allen one of his top priorities since joining Liverpool, despite agreeing not to bid for any Swansea players for at least a year.
To be fair to Rodgers, this doesn’t look like a case of a big club bullying a smaller one, because new Swansea boss Michael Laudrup has been open about the Swans’ willingness to listen to offers for Allen.
The matter would be straight forward were it not for Spurs’ interest. With Luka Modric set to depart, the north Londoners are clearly in the market for a central midfielder and pass-master Allen could be a cheaper alternative to Joao Moutinho, particularly if fourth-placed finishers Spurs only have to pay £10 million to Liverpool’s £15m.
After missing out on Gylfi Sigurdsson to the White Hart Lane outfit, Rodgers would be sick as a parrot if the same happened with Allen. It looks as though Liverpool should hurry up and meet his release clause, hoping that Spurs don’t agree a lesser fee first.

I know it's Caught Offside who are insanely unreliable, but I've been looking for an excuse to discuss this player, I think it would be a viable replacement for Modric (at least in the long-term) and would fit in well with Caulker, Siggurdson and even Bale from his time in the national set-up.

Good, tidy little player - yes. Game changer, I'm not sure. If we are going to pick up someone in his position, we really should be trying for a top player imo. Easier said than done I guess, and the maybe the only way is to find an up and coming talent.

I would argue he would be very similar to carroll except that he is a year or two in his development

What kind of fucktard logic is this?

15 mill, are you having a laugh,we just signed the best player swansea had last season for half that price,,how many times do you see a club/player come into the premiership, have one good season then turn out to be distinctly average,i mean we've got Sandro,Parker and Huddlestone who are much better playeers, and then dont forget we have livermore, jenas and probably carroll who are just as good

let him go to liverpool and it can be another load of money they have wasted,in fact hed fit in really well up there with the adams, downings and carrolls,,poor old stevie g,,he must be repeatedly punching himself in the face every transfer window,,oh,the joys of being a bin dipper nowadays

Agree, I wouldn't touch him especially at that price. Tom Carroll will be as good and probably better. Liverpool are welcome to him for £15m #Henderson£20m #Downing£20m # AndyCarroll£35m #ScousemugsPriceless

Nope, we have Swansea's best player of last year for nothing. Their second best for half that ;-)

Maybe if we get Allen or if Liverpool get him we could let them have Carroll on loan for the season.

Unless we intend to use Carroll a lot this season and he 'arrives' as a top player I think a seasons loan in that Swansea team would be perfect for his development. Good call and duly repped!

Statement regarding speculation on Swans midfielder Joe Allen

A Swansea City spokesman said: “Swansea City can confirm that Liverpool have expressed an interest in Joe Allen, despite a written agreement with Liverpool not to approach any players within the 12-month period of former manager Brendan Rodgers leaving for Anfield.

“There has also been interest from other clubs regarding his possible availability and the club is due to speak to Joe, as originally planned, about the situation when he returns from GB duty.

“The club is not prepared to release any details on whether any formal bids have been made at this stage or details of Joe’s contract, which are private and confidential. The club is extremely disappointed that speculation regarding certain aspects of his contract have been released to the media by parties outside the club.

“Fortunately the club is in a financial position where it does not need to sell any of its players and will continue to work in the best interests of its supporters, who are our priority, and the club to provide new manager Michael Laudrup with the best opportunity to be successful in the forthcoming Premier League campaign.”
