quick qn... what happens if yanited wins Europa? we get ucl finishing 5th and they keep ole? happy days?

Is that a possibility if United are second and win Europa, we finish 5th, do we get CL?

I asked the same in the Race for title thread. Looks like a no:

We would need to win CL or EL so unfortunately that's not possible

Looks like we'll just have to fight tusk and nail to get 4th.

:cautious:

You don’t get CL for finishing 5th. You can win EL or CL and get in but there’s no way to just finish 5th and get in.

Stats can be misleading. We were doing lots of last minute blocks or interceptions and they had more than (stats lol) 50% possession in our half. It looked like a matter of time then we scored a breakaway goal and they lost a but of spirit.

If grealish had been playing with that possession in our half it would have been a different outcome. The reason we won was because we have some world class forwards and they don't

Stats can be misleading yet happily quote possession stats, good one.

I take that you mean Kane when you say The world class forwards that we have? The one that had just played 120 minutes on Thursday?

Yes if Grealish had played then things could be different but the same could be said about us, if we had son playing or a fit lo celso or even a couple more days of rest we could be a lot more convincing. So you see this works both ways.

The fact is we won because we created more and better chances in the game and we only allowed one meaningful chance for them with that Barkley shot at the end when we were already 2 up so stats or no stats I think we won the game deservedly. Not sure why you are seeing so much negatives from the game under the circumstances.

I still would throw Leicester into the mix also. They will be important. Either they’ll break down and implode from 5/9 matches being vs. top six teams, or they’ll go on an epic season run in and take points from Chelsea
and West Ham, helping out Tottenham. This truly will go down to the wire.

They seem to be getting their injured players back now while others are coming into form. I don’t think they will slump this year unfortunately but I still think Chelsea are there for the taking. They need to lose a game soon though, their confidence must be through the roof right now.

Changing my mind about mourinho each day to be honest . Certainly hasn’t created this toxic atmosphere the media keep preaching otherwise we would have lost at villa IMO

It's hard to know how much of it is down to him and how much of it is down to some twats in squad, safe to assume it's a mix between both but who is more to blame we will probably never know.

The thing that worried me from day 1 and still does now is that José lost Madrid's, Chelsea and Man utd dressing room and the stories coming out reflected very badly on him and concerned that we have already seen the start of this happening in last 6-8 weeks.
It'll be some job for him to turn this around although has to be said that he seemed to get bale and Dele back online so he obviously still has some charisma left which he needs in spades to turn this around.

There's not much misleading about the stat that states they had zero shots. Not zero shots on target, zero shots. If we block a shot, it's still recorded as a shot, they had none.

As for the interceptions, seriously? That's good defending surely? Put yourself in a position to intercept a pass and you're controlling space.

As to Grealish, OK, he's a quality player and they often make a difference. I'll counter that with we were missing Son. Grealish may have made a difference to them, but Son may have bagged a brace.
The point is, you can't caveat for them unless you caveat for us.

Oh and we had 1 World class player on the pitch in Kane, who scored from a penalty. Our other striker, who I think only had his second (?) start this season, scored the other goal. He's not World class. Nor is Moura who made the goal.

It seems that every time we get a win, there's always someone out there ready with the "yeah but's." Today it's you.

We started nervously but worked hard. We were disjointed at first, but the hard work saw us grow in confidence and, as the game wore on, we eventually dominated. Their one real chance came when we were 2 up, Sanchez got too tight and they got in behind us, but the rest of the defence stood up and dealt with it.

It's worth noting that their main goal threat, a player on such good form that he's earned himself an England call up, didn't get a sniff over the entire 90 minutes.

Give the boys their due hey? Even without Grealish, Villa aren't mugs, but we pretty much stifled them for the entire game. We weren't perfect, but the performance merits respect.

Great post. To some we are always lucky when we win or the other team was poor. It’s never we deserved it.

I think our squad is too big. Being in Europa League is difficult as you play Thursdays in far flung locations and need to rotate. But ideally I think you need to have a senior squad maximum of 22. Any more is asking for morale problems.

They are best pals. Teddy sang backing vocals on Andy Cole’s hit single, while Andy was god father to all of Teddy’s dogs.

It all started actually when Teddy asked Andy to help him put a flat pack wardrobe together. At some point, Andy misread the instructions resulting in some irrepairable damage to a flimsy piece of chipboard. Teddy could never forgive him and Andy's reputation as a DIY guru was damaged forever. They hardly spoke from that day on.

A couple of things occur to me about the Mourinho / dressing room discussion:

The splits at Chelsea and Man United were all instigated or fuelled by certain types of player: I don't know who it was at Madrid, so can't speak to that, but at Chelsea it was Terry and a small coterie and at Man United it centred on Pogba. That, to me, speaks volumes.

These are both players who place themselves above their respective clubs. Terry, for all his Chelsea chest-thumping, believed he was better than he was and believed that the manager's objective of doing what was best for the club should come second to his own personal belief (and instigated unrest against two managers, let's not forget.)

Likewise, Pogba, is a player more concerned with his personal image and profile than he is about the club he happens to be playing at. His own belief is that he has God-given right to play the way he wants to play. That's not professional.

That said, the thing that those players can call on is that they are winners or were at clubs that were at the top of the tree in world football. That that inflates their egos to the point where they feel it appropriate to challenge the manager is understandable (not defendable, just understandable).

Who, in the Spurs squad is a winner? OK, Hugo has won the World Cup. Who else? Which of our players could be said to be at the pinnacle of world football? Kane is. Who else?

Which players in our squad can we be reasonably certain back the manager? Lloris and Kane are two of them.

Whether the dressing room unrest at Madrid, Chelsea or Man United was justified or not, players showing unrest at Spurs most certainly isn't - barring a couple, these players have done nothing to warrant arrogance enough to challenge the manager. And that's on the assumption that challenging a manager is ever acceptable.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention Bale - he too is a serial winner.
