There is absolutley no reason why Riquelme can't play in the right or left for us. FFS, we only just played Everton, have people already forgotten how Arteta, a supremely skilled, playmaking, midfielder operates from the right. All last year people were posting about how they wanted Arteta to join Spurs, yet people repeatedly spoke of him as a CM. He doesn't play in CM. Even when Everton play 5 in midfield. Basically there is no problem accomadating these kind of players on the right or left of midfield and they can still cut inside and orchestrate things.

As much as i love to believe i really cant see this happening :(

Is there any solid ITK from any of the regulars?

I can see it being a duff saga.. we get close and then suddenly another team snap him from us...

Would love the signing though..someone who can feed the forwards.. Bent would have a field-day with him in the team.. him and Berbs would cause mayhem!! fingers crossed ey!

Duff didn't want to play for us because of the club rivalry. (Chelsea)

here's the link, probably their version of tribal football:grin:

having read through it with my best spanglish, their is nothing new here. basically the players agent has confirmed that we are the only club that has offered anything and thinks it would be best that he comes to us rather than sit in the reserves. the same info was posted on sky the other day i think.

AS is a proper sports newspaper in Spain, isn't it?

Though it was Marcas competitor...

Strange comparison. Strange thing to say. Arteta is different to Riquelme. Arteta is quite pacey and likes to run with the ball a little.

Riquelme is more of a conductor, a sort of delux Carrick. Or modern day Hoddle even.

Would you have liked Hoddle out on the wing. Do you remember Hoddle ?

Wouldn't want Hoddle on the wing, but Riquleme isn't Hoddle and we are talking about playing as a right or left midfiedler who can come inside, not a winger. So it isn't a strange comparison with Arteta, as that is how he plays for Everton. I don't see where this issue over pace comes from. He isn't slow, no more so than the likes of Arteta and Bentley. Also you are far more likley to see Riquelme dribbling in and out of players than Arteta. Aside from all that the Copa America was just on and Riquelme did so much of his work in wide positions. But conversley, Arteta does so much of his good work form the middle, despite playing on the right. Basically showing that it is still possible to come inside and orchestrate things even when starting on the right.

Just watch any Riquelme compilation clip on youtube and you'll see plenty of him going past players and plenty of him in wide positions (not something you'll see a great deal in Hoddle clips, though i do agree they have similar technique). This whole thing about him having no pace and doesn't dribble is just messageboard talk by people who never bother to actually watch him play (not talking about you personally, but that with messageboards you get one or two people posting the same opinion, usually becasue they've read the same paper or listened to the same pundit and then suddenly everyone agrees and it becomes fact even if, as in this case, it isn't really true). He's no Lennon or Walcott, but people talk about him as if he's got the pace of Sheringham and I've even seen him compared to the Hudd in terms of mobility, which is utterly ridiculous.

i agree with what you say there joey but personally i would still give riquelme a free role with 3 midfielders behind him.

This from Clarin yesterday: http://www.clarin.com/diario/2007/08/22/um/m-01483390.htm

Basically it's saying that he really wants to sign for Boca and has offered to play for a year 'free' (he'll accept the same amount for 3 years as he'd earn for 2 in Villareal). There's a video interview with him on the page, so there's no doubts about the quotes. He's basically just hoping that Boca come up with the cash and isn't really interested in anywhere else.

Hmm that Boca interview is interesting-but then again we have heard thins like that before. If Boca cant afford him (which they probably can't) then Villereal will sell him. The one thing I'm suspect about it the lack of 'ITK' false or otherwise, all we have heard is "we are 100% in for him" which is strange for this caliber of player. Usually all the wannabe ITks jump on the band wagon to get some attention.

i agree with what you say there joey but personally i would still give riquelme a free role with 3 midfielders behind him.

That would definitely be the ideal role for him and where he is at his best, but if he does come (i don't see it), then I can't see us changing our system so much ( though we did play Keane there). But, the main thing is, even is he plays on the right or left, I still think he'll be a real asset there and will be able to come inside and make things happen as Arteta does for Everton.

Riquelme is a brilliant player but he wants to go to Boca. Whoever said he was a good player a few years ago obvisouly didn't watch the Copa America. Apart from the final he was incredible. An overhyped Jenas?? No, just a Genius. We can but dream.

i know he can shuffle with the best of them, and maybe I hadn't read the context of the thread reply of yours so I don't why you were saying he could play on the flanks, but forme Riquelme is very much a little maestro who needs to be central.

Again, not aimed at you, as I'm sure it was just a turn of phrase, but I have also noticed alot of people calling him little or lightweight. Like the pace thing it is annoys me as the guy is about 6 feet tall and heavier than 75% of Prem players. By proffesional football standards the guy is big. Also, as with most Argies, despite the fact he spends half the time on the ground trying to win FKs etc, he's tough. You have to be tough to play in the Argentinian league which is vicious.
