As Sunderland edged closer to signing two more Tottenham Hotspur players, Roy Keane, the manager, stepped up his ambitious transfer strategy this summer with a bid of up to £7million for Taye Ismaila Taïwo, the Marseilles left back. Taïwo, 23, was named African young player of the year two years ago, 12 months after he helped Nigeria to reach the World Youth Championship final. He joined Marseilles four years ago.
If a deal is completed, Taïwo could join a new-look Sunderland defence that could include Younès Kaboul, the Tottenham centre back who will have a medical today after agreeing personal terms, two days after Teemu Tainio joined from White Hart Lane, with Pascal Chimbonda set to follow. Sunderland are braced for an approach from Rangers for Dickson Etuhu, the midfield player who joined from Norwich City last summer for £1.5million.
Decent bets
Portsmouth are expected to complete the sale of Sulley Muntari to Inter Milan. He will have a medical today. The Ghana midfield player, who has been offered a five-year contract, will cost an initial £11.2million, with further sums based on appearances. Portsmouth bought Muntari from Udinese for £7million last summer. Portsmouth are in talks with Lens about Nadir Belhadj, the left back.

Jan Lastuvka has claimed that he could become West Ham United's second-choice goalkeeper. The 26- year-old Czech, who plays for Shakhtar Donetsk, was on loan to Fulham two seasons ago. “We were almost agreed [on a deal] when the transfer fee increased very much all of a sudden,” Lastuvka said.
Middlesbrough could be willing to allow Adam Johnson, the midfield player, to move on loan to Rangers, although 12 Coca-Cola Championship clubs have asked for a similar deal.
Dead certs
Liverpool have agreed to sign David Ngog from Paris Saint-Germain for about £1.2million. The 19-year-old striker will sign a four-year contract, subject to a medical.
Blackburn Rovers have withdrawn from a deal to sign Segundo Castillo, the Red Star Belgrade and Ecuador midfield player, after a trial this week.
Nick Colgan, the Ireland goalkeeper, has joined Sunderland after he was released by Ipswich Town.
Anthony Gardner will have a medical at Hull City today after the defender, who has one year left on his contract, agreed a loan from Tottenham.
Borussia Dortmund have told Hull to increase their offer for Delron Buckley after an unknown bid for the South Africa winger was turned down.
AS Monaco have denied a claim by Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, that they made a £12million offer for Niko Kranjcar, the midfield player.

Many clubs are getting much better in the transfer market nowadays, compared to before. The Premier League and football in general gets better and better, because some clubs know more about how to build a good team. If Sunderland gets our 4 players, + Taye Taiwo aswell, they have suddenly got THAT team.

Look at this defence:

Taiwo ---- Kaboul ---- Nosworthy ---- Chimbonda

If Tottenham had that defence including a fit King, I would be very happy!

From what i've heard of Taiwo, he's good going forward, but is bad at defending, same can be said for Kaboul. At spurs he's only looked going forward. Chimbonda is amongst the top 5 right back's in the EPL.

It is about the talent, and it is about putting the right players together. Tottenham have never managed to find a good defence and they have never been given time.

Now, when we have a great defender in Kaboul, with a lot of potenitial, we through him away.

I agree that Taiwo is good at going forward, and I like him better in that position, but he can also defend. The thing is that the defensive unit at Marseille has been bad. It is not only one player to blame for an personal error by one player. It is a team game, and this is all about teambuilding.

A team with

Atouba - Kaboul - King - Chimbonda would also be a good defence, I am sure.

Also: Boka - Kaboul - King - Sagna

We could have had a great defence now, but we have thrown the talents away either by not making a bid for the players, or not giving them time.

I never quite know how to take you SK, whether you are on the wind up or completely genuine, although I always enjoy reading your posts. I cannot honestly believe you would be happy with a defence of

Taiwo ---- Kaboul ---- King ---- Chimbonda

for Spurs. For a team like Sunderland, yea thats a decent looking defence, but for us? I would be devastated if that was our defence. If you put Nosworthy in there instead of King, for me it's nothing to get excited about.

Jury is still out on Kaboul for me. I'd much rather we kept a hold of him and his move to Sunderland was a loan, but I'll go with what Ramos thinks.

Now, when we have a great defender in Kaboul, with a lot of potenitial, we through him away.

Honest answer please SK, Kaboul or Woodgate? As I've said above, I'm not completely sure about selling Kaboul, but to say we have thrown him away is a bit much, especially when we have Woodgate. If we are to push top four, we need a CB that can come straight in next season and cover for either King or Woodgate. No matter Kaboul's potential, he is not ready to just jump in and cover, at the moment he is simply not good enough.

But we're selling those players to Sunderland because we have better players...

So you dont rate Hutton, Woody, King and Bale? Thats one of the best defences in the country. This isn't just a difference in opinion. You are a juvenile nutcase who is oblivious to the fact that your so called ones to watch+ are actually quite shit.

Kaboul hasn't given himself enough time. He thinks he's ready to play in a top 4 defence, when clearly he isn't. I wish him well but his attitude is all wrong for our team. As for Atouba, You can fuck right off with that suggestion.

Look indeed. Terrifying, isn't it?

Gordon could be a very busy boy next season.

Ha ha I knew SK would spot this!

I saw this pop up on News Now whilst at work and would have posted a thread myself albeit 1pm - 2pm on a weekday it's practically impossible to get into SC let alone post or even more so start a thread so wasn't able to do!

I think we're safe to let Chimbs and Kaboul go through as reckon Hutton and Woody will prove ok replacements in the side...

I think Taiwo would've been a good buy. Play him at LW as as he matures move him back to LB

If BAE will leave in January for PSG, then we have to buy Taiwo as the replacement!!

No, we don't. I'm not going to abuse you like everyone else does but you've posted this in 3 threads today. Taiwo is an average LB who scores the odd wonder belter. He has been shown up so many times playing in a poor league. He is a Comolli style signing, somebody who isn't suited to the prem at all.

He is not suited to the Premier League??? If he is not suited to the Premier League, then - WHO IS???

I cannot think of a player who is more suited to the Premier League than him. He is the perfect player for the Premier League, and we have to act quick to be able to get him.

I also said the same with Romaric - to mention one example, and now he is playing at Sevilla.

Sounds like a dodgy knockoff of Daiwoo or something. What next Casio Dhiatsu?

What about Lasagne Karma? He's a decent LB who I think he plays in Luxembourg.

I have seen Taiwo play and thought he was average.

If BAE leaves, then i would much rather see us go for Bridge, or just play Bale at LB more regularly.
