I don't really know much about Piatek, looks like a solid backup but it's absolutely criminal that we're in this position at striker.

Kane has been injured each of the last three seasons and you can clearly see he's slowed down a bit. He plays all the time for England and yet he's played every single EPL minute this year for us except 20 and he's played every UCL minute except for the dead rubber against Bayern. We've run him into the ground because we have no other options, it's no surprise at all he got injured carrying the load he does.

After this season, we need to take a much more intelligent strategy for rotating Kane. He's going to be 27 this summer with a lot of miles on him and a long injury history. If we want him healthy and anywhere near his best, he's going to need to be rotated much more often which will require us to actually invest up front.
I think previously we haven't been able to attract a class striker to play backup to Kane simply because good strikers want to play and we couldn't offer them that. Son and Llorente as backup to Kane was about the best we could do, although we all hoped Llorente would be able to contribute more than he did the times he was on the pitch.

Looking for a positive in all this, now Kane's injury record is such that it makes us more attractive to good strikers because they know they will get a lot of games each season.

It's as much on Kane as it is the manager or the club. Kane needs to realize that he can't play every match.

If his contract is so overly incentivized that it encourages him to play every match, that's on the club and they should re-work it (assuming they want to keep him long term and performing at an elite level).

It's also not easy to find high ceiling strikers that are willing to play behind Kane, especially with the amount of matches he insists on playing. This is why the Piatek opportunity is so intriguing.

I see where you're coming from, but I think the couldn't attract a good striker argument is slightly revisionist. Sure we couldn't attract the absolute top end of the market, but Janssen was a 21 year old Dutch full international with a top scoring record in the Eredivisie and Llorente, while on the back end of his career, was a guy who won titles at Juventus, played in a previous UCL final, won a World Cup with Spain, and was on over 100K here. We attracted some decently well rated talent, they just weren't the right fit.

My main argument though is that Kane really needs to protected going forward, he's obviously our best player but his health means he needs to be more cautiously used and rested as regularly as possible. Going into a season without 1-2 viable back ups to Kane is now untenable.

I don't think I could ever blame a footballer or athlete for wanting to play at every chance possible. It's on the manager, medical staff, fitness coaches, and club hierarchy to utilize the players in the best way possible for the club and ensure their health and fitness.

Players don't pick the XI.

I'm polish and I have mixed feelings about this, but if DL could include some deadwood in a swap deal, this would be a nobrainer for me

Oh don't get me started. I'm currently reading Inverting The Pyramid (fantastic book) ..

.. and reading about the old 2-3-5 and W-M formations. The numbering scheme gives me sleepless nights. But anyway, back on Piatek ..
I'm literally reading it and at the same point as you now. Is great so far.

On topic: we definitely need more players who know where the back of the net is. I'm a bit concerned about the reports that his all-round game isn't great.

Why mixed feelings? Is he shit?

He's shit isn't he?

He was massively overhyped in Poland. There was Piątkomania, especially right after his move to Milan, which is still regarded as a big club. Plenty of journalists and fans were copying his celebration. It was unbearable, especially when pundits thought that Piątek is not only better than Milik, but also Lewandowski.

We don't have great pundits in Poland.

He's a very limited footballer, but he had a great spell with Genoa and at first with Milan. Recently, Milan became the worst place for any footballer, but Piątek is monetizing his fame. He might be focusing on all that commercial shit.

He appeared in a TV ad for the biggest telephone company, plenty of his Instagram pictures are pure advertisements, he's the face of many brands: mineral mater, rice waffles. He appeared in Polish campaign of Netflix's "Casa del Papel" and is the face of FIFA 20 in Poland.

And this is all just last six months.

Ah, ok. So even though he's been overhyped, is he a decent stand in for Kane? Or are we literally fucked?

He's kind of good, but still unproven for me - as Genoa player he had a fantastic season, then he had good season in awful Milan, and now it's even worse. Milan is ultra shit now and i bet Kane would have as bad season as Piątek does in their shirt, even if Harry creates for himself. He played decent for our national team last year, so he still can play football.

If we sign him and Jose will be able to rebuild his confidence, he might be a really good signing.

We’ve been needing a Lewis Holtby #FaceOfTheMedia replacement since, well, Lewis left.

Excellent.
