At first I wondered what the big deal was about Ince being the first black Englishman to manage in the top flight, then I saw these statistics:

BLACK MANAGERS AND COACHES
Managers: Paul Ince (Blackburn), Keith Alexander (Macclesfield)
Assistants: Keith Curle (Crystal Palace), Iffy Onuora (Lincoln)
First team coaches: Chris Hughton (Newcastle), Terry Connor (Wolves)
Other: Noel Blake (England Under-16 coach), Chris Ramsay (Tottenham Under-16 coach), Steve Brown (QPR Centre of Excellence boss)

That is not a lot! Stats taken from the link below, interview from John Barnes saying he's applied for some jobs in League One and not even had a reply. Quite interesting. Views...

You're right, there are very few black managers, particularly in the Premier League.

There is also Leroy Rosenior, ex-footballer who has managed Brentford and now manages Torquay.

Who cares?

It doesn't matter what colour they are. This over emphasis is a problem in our society today. If black former players want to become coaches then fair enough, if they want to become media celebrities, then fair enough. It is their choice.

CH - Not an Englishman !

Considering the fact there were only 10 Englishmen* managing Premier Clubs before Ince took up the position at Blackpool
I would be more worried about that fact.

Megson,Hodgson,Southgate,Keegan,Redknapp,Pulis,Curbishley,
Brown,Mowbray & Bruce.

Says it all really.
No Englishman has ever won the Premier League

*
This of course includes the 3 newbie managers from the Championship.

Like they were saying about it on the radio the other day, Paul Ince isn't making a song and dance about it. He doesn't give a fuck and fair play to him. It's all a load of bullshit anyway, it's boring and old hat as far as i'm concerned. Well in this country that is. We've moved on and hopefully other countries can too.

Over time things will change, i'm black and I don't really see it as a problem at the moment. I think that as time goes by there will be more black managers and coaches, just like there were few black players in the 60s, 70s etc. It will just take a bit of time for these things to happen and as rightly pointed out there hasn't been anyone good enough yet. I think most prem teams would take Frank Riijkaard as there manager.

What I think is more interesting is why is there NO British born Indian, Greek or Turkish players. Yes I know there are a few Greeks and Turks but not many.

Absolutely! been thinking that for quite a few years. It's a bit of a mystery that one isn't it?

Bloody good question.

A few years back we had a team of Asians in our Sunday league, and they were sponsored by the local council in attempt to get more Asians interested in football. It seems to be something that is being addressed, but it would take a while to get any top flight players. At least the first steps have been taken, I am sure that we will see a more multicultural England team in 20 years.

There was an British born Indian who played for Leeds & I think Bury...but I have no idea whether he got anywhere. Can't remember his first name but I think his surname was Singh. It's pretty weird considering how many Asians there are in the UK.

How long is it since we've had large numbers of black players in England? Even 20 years ago, when Barnes was in his heyday, they were comparatively thin on the ground. That's reflected in the steady increase of capped black players over the 30-odd years since Ron Greenwood picked Viv Anderson:

Maybe this question would be better asked in a few years' time, as the post-Barnes/Ince generation of black players hangs up its boots.

Some good stuff on that site, including the unnamed England manager (thought to be Graham Taylor) who claimed FA officials told him not to pick so many black players. We may have moved on since then, but let's not kid ourselves that we've got rid of institutionalised racism altogether.

Fwiw - American football used to have very few black Quarter Backs (the old racist mantra being you had to be a super-intelligent White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant from an Ivy League college to play QB), and zero coaches. There are now several black QBs, and a fair few black head coaches (in charge of prestigious teams such as Chicago and Indy).

The likes of Rijkaard and Gullit have coached very big clubs too. Big name foreign players may seem more "exotic" to our dull as ditchwater chairmen.

As well as being a top player, Ince always had a will to win and aggressive confidence about him. Rather like Roy Keane. Ince's "Guvnor" stuff was a bit silly, but I think he is a leader and he will command respect. I think he's a good choice, and hope he succeeds.

Hammer - Nail - head spot on SS57.

Plus just as an aside what is the level of black managers in europe and Scotland because thats where we recruit most of our managers from.
only Gullit so far I believe or does he not count as a black manager in the Prem or has everybody forgot him because well lets face it he wasn't really black not like our own black Englishmen he was a dutchman???
I can't help thinking someone is pushing an agenda and conveniently ignoring the fact that Ince is not the first black manager in the Prem.
