He was much, much better in the 2nd haf. But of course, that doesnt fit with the narrative here.
What narrative he was a fucking total passenger today, jesus if people were impressed by his performace today god help us he was shite. He needs to adapt fast to this league he has been here long enough, he wont get the time he seems to want on the ball. Not to mention how weak he is he is brushed of the ball so easily.

Whether or not Lamela plays it is crazy to leave out Chadli with his goal scoring potential. Eriksen and Chadli have to play. The 3rd attacking midfielder should be either Dembele or Lamela or Townsend depending on who we are playing. Against Chelsea probably the same team that beat them last time.

Pains me to say it as I've had such high hopes for him but he needs to be dropped from the team indefinitely. He's had an extended run now and its just not happening for him. His confidence must have gone completely as he seems to have seriously regressed as a footballer. His touch, his dribbling, his passing and his shooting are all worryingly poor, and actually much worse than the brief glimpes we had of him under AVB.

I think he is working to deep on the pitch. To pick the ball up 50 yards from goal the majority of time is not working.

If he were to be off the front man where Eriksen gets a lot of his opportunities to affect the game, it could be a different story. The question is, is he better than others in the no10 role?

I'm in your boat, Otter. (I suspect otters don't actually use boats but that's by the by). There's no doubting the guy's work rate but going forwards he seems to have lost all confidence to beat a man which is what he used to do for fun in Serie A. Get him out of the firing line, bring in Chadders and build Erik up slowly.

Our team will be horrifically unbalanced if Eriksen or Chadli play on the right- you'll see the same problems that occurred in the first half

The lads got some ability and nice balance/movement with the ball. The trouble is nothing ever comes off for him. Doesn't really have a change of pace to really get away from people and not strong enough to compensate for that. His delivery or final ball is hit and miss and that's being kind. He does have a great attitude and works hard for the team though. He was poor today even in the second half.

Our record signing. Surely that's harder and harder to justify with every passing week. Another totally dull and uninspiring performance. Just doesn't deliver.

in what way? wouldn't they just largely do the same as lamela but with the added bonus of being able to cross without cutting back inside?

Eriksen has played on the right before and was useless (please no Lamela's useless comments), Chadli's not the sort of player to run to the byline and cross and he'll look to get into central areas as well- I don't even think he's played that much on the right.

Thought he was one of our better player today. Doesn't say much because we were generally poor, but he didn't shy away and looked for those little pockets of space.

His problem is that he's not quick enough for this league, and I mean that in terms of mentality and not physical speed. He likes to play with time on the ball. When he gets it he either waits a second for that perfect opportunity to find a player, or he'll take it forward at a comfortable pace to wait for an opening. The problem is that, whilst this works in Italy and perhaps Spain, it just isn't possible in English football. Paulinho does exactly the same. They dither a little bit. It doesn't mean that they're not smart enough or good enough, it's just a patient style of play that isn't working here.

Townsend is another youngster who has the talent but cannot translate that on the pitch. His problem is different to Lamela's though. He can play quickly, has quicker reactions, but he isn't an intelligent player. Lamela is smarter and is better off coming in from the right where he can link up play, something you need brains for. He just needs to be be quicker and more decisive about it. Conversely, Townsend is better off on the left where he can try to knock that ball past players, get behind the full back, and whip the ball in, which he can do well if given the chance. A simple strategy that can be effective, and doesn't require the greatest levels of footballing intelligence.

Decent enough performance in the second half, pops up in some nice pockets of space and kept things moving on occasion. Definitely some of his better performances over the past month or so

Still very 'meh' for me though, I don't think he really excels at anything. A lot of time he receives the ball to feet, has a poor touch which results in him attempting to pass to the closest teammate on the stretch which is of no benefit to the team and can put us under pressure

I keep seeing posts from people saying he obviously has the talent and you can see the "odd flashes of brilliance". Aside from the rabona I can't really think of any moments where I've been that impressed.

IMO he's only in the team because there's no one else who can really play wide right atm and he's better at the pressing side of the game than Townsend. Not sure if we should actively look to sell him but if an attractive arose in the summer, I think I'd be tempted to cash in and try elsewhere

He really was pretty shoddy again tbh. I'm surprised pochetino is giving him so much time on the pitch, and subbing townsend off before this guy. Townsend is currently offering more and the gap seems to increasing.
Poor decision making from him again today, in particular on the counter with kane sprinting forward ahead of him but still surrounded, and lamela just kicks it at him instead of waiting for the right pass. He gets rid of the ball like its a hot potato because he does not believe in himself, so how can we believe in him?

The phrase 'Jack of all trades master of none ' springs to mind. I'm fairly non-plussed by him overall. Decent squad player from what I've seen, but not much more. If he were from our academy I believe he'd be out on loan. Lots of room for improvement I suppose and I'm not anti at all. I certainly hope for more and he's a likeable lad.
