Surely by now we have the collective experience to have a good go in all the cups as well as the league. Let's win them all!

Are you proposing that we play our first team for the Palace & Arsenal game or rest them for the palace game?
Why are we discussing whether to field a strong team in certain games? I would hope that all of the players in our squad are 'first team' players, so it shouldn't matter at all who runs out of the tunnel and lines up for the game. If they're not capable of playing at a first team level they shouldn't be in the squad ffs.

And why is it our best chance? Because most teams see it as meaningless.

My point is that nobody tries at this stage of this cup. We shouldn't change our approach just because it's Arsenal...who I can guarantee won't give a shit about the game.

Sorry Talkshow, I normally agree with a lot of your posts but not with this.

This is the NLD. It doesn't matter that it's in the 3rd round of the COC. I don't care if Arsenal don't care and put their under 15s out. I want to beat them into a corner and make them cry.

The momentum we could gain from beating these early in the season would be massive.

I don't think we have a chance in hell of making it to 4th anyway, so balls in for the cups.

A win against the scum midweek, no matter what the team, and then playing City on the Saturday gives the fans an extra boost and the players too. No one will give us a chance v City but if the players get a positive feeling from beating Arsenal and the fans are up for it we'll beat them if we turn up and play our best football.

Momentum is what this is all about, and there is too much to be gained from winning this game to put out the second string.

Our current paper thin, inexperienced squad is going to struggle massively to cope with the fixture glut in September/October. We have Palace, City, Swansea, and Liverpool in the league, with Arsenal in this cup tie and two Europa fixtures. Poch better be going all out to convince Levy to make 2-3 quality signings in the next week, or this run of very difficult games could prove disastrous for his tenure as our manager.

And being spanked by the gooners at the Lane isn't exactly the best way to lift the mood at the club and in the stands.

Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Rose, Bentaleb, Mason, Alli, Townsend, Pritchard, Kane

Play the stars (Lloris, Alderweireld, Kane), give Trippier his opportunity,
and fill rest of the team with the guys who care the most.

I like the optimism, but for me beating an Arsenal second string in a meaningless competition isn't going to create a huge amount of momentum, particularly when we've got more important games either side of that match.

It just seems to me people are forgetting how shagged out we got last season as a result of all the cup games we played.

Yes it's early in the season and the players should be fine to play 3 times in a week, but it takes its toll later in the season.

I agree that it's unlikely we'll finish 4th, and it would be great to win a trophy. But let's make it one that matters. The Europa League could give us much bigger games than a match against the Arsenal youths, plus winning it gets us a Champions League place as well as a trophy. And the FA Cup is the FA Cup...it's about time we took that more seriously.

But the [Insert sponsor here] Cup is the least prestigious of the 3 and offers no real bonus on top.

@yankspurs How old are you? Just to gauge why you would prefer us to try and get 4th rather than winning cups?

Getting 4th is comfortably a more impressive and enviable achievement than winning the league cup these days I'm afraid, whether that sits right with you or not.

I'm 26 and my favourite Spurs memories are the 1999 and 2008 League Cup wins, and beating City to 4th in 2010 and the subsequent CL campaign.

I know when the club was in its best shape during those years and which achievement of those best reflected that fact, and which one felt the most glorious too. It was competing with the very best clubs in europe (and beating them) on the biggest stage in world football.

We have no chance of 4th this season of course, but that doesn't change the fact that not only would I take 4th over the league cup, I think anyone who wouldn't is living in the past.

Away to City, the best result most people would expect is a draw and a point. The likelihood being that we'll lose. I don't want us to risk throwing away a potential run in the the only cup we've been successful in over the past 20+ years, just for the extremely slim hope that we don't lose away from home against potentially the best team in the league.

Well this Cup is meant to be where the likes of Pritchard and others are to get their chance. Tough draw.

No need to change that. Giving them a run-out in a North London Derby is good experience, even if it is a less important NLD than normal.

I think if we approach Arsenal with the attitude this game isn't important we will get absolutely dicked at home. That will do wonders for the mood. I'm sure they'll be up for it and they have a much more complete squad to do it with.

I'm quite surprised by this thread in that some people are still talking about 4th place, I'd say we're miles off it at the moment, as far as we've been in recent memory despite finishing 5th last season - in terms of putting up a concerted fight for it. I think we also like to talk about the Europa league in very different terms to the actual experience of it.. i.e. we are always down as one of the favourites but always found wanting against the first decent team we play, which certainly puts our big game nous, if not our talent, into question. So I wouldn't have a lot of confidence in either of those personally.

Hopefully by the end of the window we have enough players to put decent teams out in more than one comp, but I certainly don't think we should see ourselves as bigger than the League Cup. I'd f@cking love to win it, to win bloody anything..

Who's actually missing from our 1st team that beat Arse at the lane last year and who has made Arse significantly stronger? So far this year they were lucky to beat palace away and lost to Wet Spam at home and drew with Liverpool hardly great form themselves.

What were you thinking. It's not too late to ditch her and trade her in for a better model.
