As far as European transfer gossip goes, L'Equipe are one of the more reliable newspapers. The French sport newspaper does like a gossip and doesn't get everything right, but they gossip much less than others and seem to have their claims based more in reality than some transfer rumour production engine.
On Monday they claim that Tottenham Hotspur are in 'advanced' discussions to sign Lassana Diarra. The midfielder is out of contract having left Lokomotiv Moscow and has been linked with a return to play in France with Marseille one of the club previously stated as being interested. Diarra also became a QPR player in September, he passed a medical and was a guest to watch the club - but the deal never went through.
L'Equipe say that Tottenham Hotspur's offer is an interesting financial package including salary, signing-on bonus and performance-related bonuses. Spurs would surely only be willing to have any payments weighted toward appearances and that will be what the discussions could stall over.
Diarra is only 29 years old and has played for clubs including Tottenham's fierce rivals Arsenal. Chelsea are another club on the midfielder's CV along with Real Madrid, Portsmouth and Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala. At Lokomotiv Moscow, Diarra did well and the fans voted him player of the month more than once... however, he fell out with those in charge and his contract was cancelled.
