Benitez has said there's a release clause in the contract, should they be relegated.
Additionally - isn't it £90 million minimum if they survive?!
He's been brought in specifically with the job of keeping them in the Premier League.
I think the term we're looking for is "speculate to accumulate".
It's a no lose situation for both manager and chairman. If they go down Ashley can bring someone else in on a lower wage.
If they stay up, they're quids in and Rafa has a more long term job.
See, i wondered about the get out clause, but if that is the case then it immediately cheapens his position - he has no reason to really try that hard if he knows he can walk away if it goes to shit. The only way i can imagine it works is that if they get relegated he can walk away, but if they stay up he gets a huge, huge pay out and then has to see out the two years remaining.
Still think it's a massive coup to bring him in and that him being there has just doubled their odds of staying up but, if they do stay up and unless Ashley puts his hand in his pocket in the transfer window, i don't see Rafa staying there long if he can possibly help it. He likes to spend, and i don't see any suggestion that they have anything like a useful youth setup so, while "speculate to accumulate" is about the last phrase i'd use to ever describe Ashley, he really is going to have to if he intends to follow through with the relative magnitude of this managerial appointment.
