Benitez has said there's a release clause in the contract, should they be relegated.
Additionally - isn't it £90 million minimum if they survive?!
He's been brought in specifically with the job of keeping them in the Premier League.
I think the term we're looking for is "speculate to accumulate".
It's a no lose situation for both manager and chairman. If they go down Ashley can bring someone else in on a lower wage.
If they stay up, they're quids in and Rafa has a more long term job.

See, i wondered about the get out clause, but if that is the case then it immediately cheapens his position - he has no reason to really try that hard if he knows he can walk away if it goes to shit. The only way i can imagine it works is that if they get relegated he can walk away, but if they stay up he gets a huge, huge pay out and then has to see out the two years remaining.

Still think it's a massive coup to bring him in and that him being there has just doubled their odds of staying up but, if they do stay up and unless Ashley puts his hand in his pocket in the transfer window, i don't see Rafa staying there long if he can possibly help it. He likes to spend, and i don't see any suggestion that they have anything like a useful youth setup so, while "speculate to accumulate" is about the last phrase i'd use to ever describe Ashley, he really is going to have to if he intends to follow through with the relative magnitude of this managerial appointment.

Spent £75 million across the Summer and January windows this season - recouped only £2 million.
Spent £37 million last season.

Best thing about Rafa being back in England is we can roll out the magic man gifs again

They're definitely going down now.

Only six points behind, with a game in hand, but looking at their fixture list you can't see them winning three more games which will probably be the least that they need. Could be a short contract for Rafa.

Really not sure what Benitez was thinking here. He could have waited until the summer or next season for a better job, as I'm sure one will have become available, now he has seriously risked having relegation on his CV in the same year he lasted 5 months at real Madrid. Catastrophic

He probably didn't realise what a mess the club is in behind the scenes and how bad and how much the players don't care. See Garde at villa and numerous other examples in recent times.

Baffles me how they can be so shit with some really talented players. I use the term 'shit' reservedly since they've taken way too many points off us lately.

Krul has been injured most of the season but based on some of the games against us over the years he's an excellent keeper.

Lascelles hasn't adapted well to the PL yet but he was supposed to be a huge talent before he signed for them. Wijnaldum, Perez and Mitrovic are certainly players that would be good squaddies for us, Wijnaldum might even get into the XI if he buys into the Poch way.

If you talk to Newcastle fans Krul has been very hit or miss and recently they think Elliot is and should be the new #1 if it's between the two of them.

Also wasn't it just one great performance he had against us and the next was an absolute mare? Kind of highlights the point I'm making I guess.

Would definitely take Wijnaldum if he was available for a decent price.

I remember commenting in the motd thread that I thought They had too much quality to lose the relegation battle. I'm really surprised they have continued to be so poor.

Yeah, I thought they'd bought their way out of trouble but they've been awful so far.

It was Steve McLaren's mix of Dutch and Geordie accents that has confused the fuck out of them - especially since most of them speak French or Spanish.
