It's beyond me why Benitez didn't take a short-term contract at Newcastle.

If they stayed up, the job would be his permanently. If they went down, he could leave per his contract, and say (fairly) that he'd inherited a hopeless cause.

As it is, he either has to spend a season in the Championship, or else jump ship, break his contract, and look like a bit of a dick (as well as a relegated loser).

I suspect he didn't properly investigate just how atrocious Newcastle have been his season. For me, they're definitely the 3rd worst team in the league - just a bit better that Sunderland, but some way behind 4th-worst Norwich.

He has a relegation release clause

I'm looking forward to seeing them drop down into Hades, their fans have such an air of entitlement about them.
I used to think that this until I moved up to Newcastle but they really don't. They just want a half decent side and not to be battling relegation.

Some of my family are geordies and they cant believe how bad Benitez has been, they are insanely depressed and think this is the worst they have ever performed all season and that its worse than the last time they got relegated.

There is one silver lining, I told them I can get them tickets to Burton Albion vs Newcastle next season :sneaky:

I'm not Benitez's biggest fan but he's only had a handful of games, he's not Merlin. IMO the players need to take most of the responsibility for this one although overall, Ashley, being the owner really has to take responsibility for the general malaise at the club.

They held out well against LIverpool then....

A must win game and they conceded after thirty seconds.

Sad... for about a second.

Newcastle were my 2nd favourite prem team, thanks to a legaacy of ginola, ferdinand and asprilla + once upon a time frequent visits to the night-time-takeway-dropping, sick-on-curbstone-leaving,, blow-up-doll-in-bin-placing capital of England.

Would have much preferred the mackams down to the level of the smoggies, so it's a shame... but oh well COYS. Come back soon you geordie bastards. Love your women.

Perfect Karma. Newcastle 'Wonga' Utd - may loan sharks never get to (dis)grace a football shirt again.
