20th most valuable club in the world and the best manager they can find is Steve Bruce? Fuck.

To be fair how much money they've got means nothing because Ashley doesn't want to spend it. He'll have just come up with a shortlist of 5 or 6 managers and then picked the one that he could get for the cheapest I suspect.

Bruce does make me laugh as well. How many times has he taken a job and then buggered off for a so called higher profile position less than a year later.

Him and Ashley are welcome to each other. Feel sorry for the fans though.

Yep he is a massive mercenary.

Allardyce would have been better than him too, although he supposedly turned them down (and too right after they got shot of him to bring Keegan back in and look how that turned out!).

I really don't understand why those fat geordies are objecting so vehemently to this

I heard John Carver & Shola Ameobi on radio extolling the virtues of Stevie Bruce

Surely these two should be regarded as the epitome of football knowedge

Steve Bruce has resigned from Sheff Wed. The compensation hadn't been agreed between them and Newcastle.

He's done this before. A way to force the move.

2001
Nov 1 - Bruce resigns
Nov 22 - Injunction
Nov 30 - Palace appoint Trevor Francis
Dec 12 - Birmingham appoint Bruce

Palace got half the compensation they were seeking.

Sheff Wed have been very good with him. They appointed him just after he'd had some operations and both his parents died and he was taking a break, allowed him to finish that break and start the job late.

There were reports over the weekend that he'd be the lowest paid manager in the Premier League, 1m a year. Benitez was on 6m.

Bruce confirmed.

Place your relegation bets now.

EDIT: Some of the replies to the tweet are pure gold.

We all know that this is a terrible appointment. If it was any other club you'd assume the owner was an idiot. With Ashley I just assume he doesn't care.

I don't rate Rafa as much as most people. And think he shafted the Newcastle fans, going off to China.

But I'll admit, this is a bit of a come down.

Here is a list of the Newcastle United Managers who have managed 200 or more Premier League matches in their career, for NUFC and other clubs.

The table shows total number of Premier League games managed, average points per PL game, then the average goals for and against in the Premier League:

Shafted the Newcastle fans? He stayed with them against all odds even when they were playing in the Championship. He's stayed for much longer than most people expected him to given the situation. I don't think Newcastle fans hold any ill feelings towards him because it's completely understandable that he's decided his position is untenable at the club and he's taken them as far as anyone can while Ashley refuses to invest.

I think I'm going to put money on the majority of Newcastle games next season to end up 1-1 based on Bruce's premier league record!

I thought Ashley, as an ace businessman (in his own wet dreams), was meant to understand his customers, not further provoke their contempt and hatred.

Still, with Josh Onomah apparently on way out out of Spurs, maybe Bruce will make a sizeable offer.

He left for the cash, not because he couldn't take Newcastle any further imo. And I think Benitez constantly used his god like status with the fans there, against the club.
