Interesting to see where they go from here. They look absolutely shagged with a paper thin squad due to injuries (and a notable suspension), key players woefully out of form, and a manager who has never had this sort of pressure of expectation.

I fancy Fulham to take it to them on Saturday, they'll still be hurting from Sunday and tonight.

Laughing out loud at this club. They can piss off for suddenly thinking they are the elite, or above us, with just a season or so of European games. Couldn't even reach the Europa games. See how inept they are in handling mid week European games with the league. Hope to see more of the Villa and spammers getting some reality checks sooner than later. Make our previous 5-6 consecutive CL involvement while still advancing to next round all the most impressive no matter what.

Glad they looked like going through then went out of Europe altogether by the end of it. Sick of the Newcastle love-in, hype and endless sympathy for their injuries.

Howe will be fine. The fans love him for the most part and the injury crisis is understood. Don't forget he is the first coach to get the fans properly on board for years. They have had a shite time under cashly.

It's a bit different with the Toon fans. They are fanatical and fanciful, but it comes from a a place of lunacy as opposed to misplaced arrogance... If that makes sense.

I've a soft spot as I lived up there for a while. Mad as a box of frogs they are but a generally sound and sensible fan base.

They might have a massive uphill struggle.to fight for a European spot but it's much like our misfortune with injuries. Their fans will be bouncing wherever they end up. Just hopefully not above us....

I think Howe has more than enough credit in the bank with them, he’s the least of their worries,
Southgate/Howe swapsies would be great though!

I keep hearing that Newcastle are “well ahead of schedule”. There’s two issues with that thinking:

1) It assumes everyone else is going to remain static - which never happens. Every team is striving to get better. Us and Villa look like we’re making rapid progress, de Zerbi and Brighton are still an excellent combo and Chelsea and Utd won’t be in their current state of dysfunction forever. There is no schedule - you’ve got to take your opportunities otherwise you’ll miss them (a la Spurs in peak Poch era).

2) No schedule will involve a team regressing. There are too many injuries to say that Newcastle are going backwards but even before the injuries they weren’t as tough to beat as last season.

I always thought their starting XI had 4 or 5 players who played well above themselves last season. Now some of those (e.g. Almiron) have regressed to the mean and the team has a couple of holes to fill even when the injuries clear.

No doubt that no European football helps them after Christmas though.

Did Trippier have money on Newcastle going out last night? Bit of a Grobbelaar performance from him... 😬

One of Howe's biggest question marks was how he was as a defensive coach. I think he has passed that and proven he can keep a defence tight, win and not be too open.

But the other question mark was how he did in the market because his last few windows at Bournemouth were his downfall.

Will be interesting to see how they do in the following two windows because I think some of that group have gone as far as they can (Murphy, Schar, Longstaff, Lascelles, Ritchie etc etc).

When they first got taken over, the prediction was that they'd make sweeping changes, they haven't and have actually done it the sensible way but those names were always going to be bumped off at some point , getting CL football probably helped delay it.

Think Trippier (and others) are running on empty. They've started how many games with a quick turnaround when they're not used to it? I know Trippier came on and didn't start last night, but fatigue might be hitting them hard.

Trippier currently showing the sort of form that made many of us (myself included) quite happy to see him move on from Spurs.

And yet he was by far the best full back we had at the club between Walker and this season's emergence of Porro.

Most of the hate he got was way OTT simply because he wasn't Walker. But it was only the last few months where he, and the rest of the team bar the CL run, was actually poor.

That's because of FFP being a problem for them, the second they clear that hurdle and have a spine of solid players throughout he middle, the crazy spending on expensive wingers will start trickling in, I will put a fiver down that in 2 years, they will spend 300mil+ in the summer window.
