Been a great replacement for Verts. Selection headache for Poch now but I get the feeling Kev isnt going to kick up a fuss if Verts comes back in

He's our most reliable backup centre back in a long time. We've had the likes of Fazio and Kaboul giving us nightmares the last few years. What I like about Wimmer is that he's a like for like stand in for Vertonghen. Both are left footed centre backs which I think works very well alongside Alderweireld. He's been the key to the effectiveness of both Vertonghen and Wimmer. Similar to the effect that King had on various partners alongside him.

Next season I would look at getting another defensive midfielder. That way if anything happens to Toby (or we rest him a bit more) then Dier can fill in and we'll still have a defensive midfielder to come in. Unless Bentaleb can get back on track but I just don't see the same level of protection that Dier gives us.

I'm not here to pick a fight but have you no recollection of big "Tone" Gardener?? He was quick on the turn, never looked like giving away a pen by having his hands all over an opponent and was one of those centre halves that never made you nervous with the ball at his feet.
Jeez some of you guys have short memories

he has an air of confidence in his passings.. absolutely love those swift through balls forward without fear.. and that helped us to the 2nd goal from Kane.. really keen to see his passing stats.. IMO, he's more decisive than Jan.. he surely will keep the place by merit.. fast becoming another favourite player of mine.. hope he can get a goal soon!

Toby diagonal long field passes and Wimmer incisive long ball grounder, great complimentary skills to have for our CBs!!

He also seems a bit more sturdy than Jan and not as easily knocked off the ball, or beaten in the air. Seems like they are good options to have, depending on the opponents.

Been very impressed. He's a bit more physical, and a bit less gifted on the ball compared to Vertonghen (who, let's not forget, was looking back to his impressive best before the injury), but being able to blend in seamlessly so quickly shows a high degree of footballing intelligence. Encouraging, considering he's playing alongside a CB delivering a masterclass in defending. Plenty to learn from there.

He got his opportunity, and he's taken it like a born Wimmer.

Very interesting to see what happens when Verts is ready to start again. Why change a CB pairing that's won eight and drawn one of its last 10 games? Unless they're shattered I say keep playing them and Verts will have to wait.

How funny. You made the exact same comment I made last week. You get 5 agrees, I got a number of disagrees & WTF's .... ;)

Yeh....I disagreed with you......only joking! Suppose it just depends who is reading what at a particular time.

The important player to keep happy is Alderweireld.
If he would rather play with Vertonghen than Wimmer, then so be it.
He makes other players around him play better - I guess they just feel more confident.
If you paired Wimmer with Capoue or Kaboul (after the troubles), then I suspect he would not shine so much.
He'd be a nervous wreck after a few games.

Going back into my SC memory bank, this was my post on Kevin Wimmer when I watched him play the last game for FC Koln Vs Wolfsburg on 23 May 2015. This was just after we agreed to sign him.

Can't believe how close my assessment has been till now....

I'm interested in seeing if he can play with Vertonghen in a pairing. Obviously both are primarily left sided, but if Toby were to get injured I'd prefer kev and jan rather than moving Dier back.

great pass (to Alli) for the second goal yesterday

That was one of the best passes of the season for me, exceptional.

He continues to impress and credit to the scouting team for finding him - really gives you faith we have that setup right now. Seems a top lad as well when you see his social media posts.

Would love him to get a goal now, maybe up at Newscastle to clinch a win and the title...too far?!
