Tottenham will stick with Redknapp after ditching contingency plans

The Spurs boss missed out on the England job but is set to stay in charge at White Hart Lane even if the Londoners miss out on a place in next season's Champions League

EXCLUSIVE
By Greg Stobart

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is set to stay at the club this summer even if he fails to guide his
team
to a place in next season’s Champions League.

Spurs have ditched contingency plans, including a potential move for Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers, made before Redknapp was overlooked for the England job as the Football Association appointed Roy Hodgson this week.

Chairman Daniel Levy has a number of misgivings over Redknapp following Tottenham’s poor run of form in the
final
third of the season but he is described as being almost certain to stick with the 65-year-old this summer.

The Londoners were so convinced that Redknapp would be leaving for England that they lined up Roma general manager Franco Baldini as director of football in a planned change to the club’s management structure.

But Levy has concluded that Redknapp deserves another season in charge, even if Spurs miss out on a Champions League place that looked a certainty when Fabio Capello resigned as England manager at the start of February. They currently sit fourth in the Premier League with two games to play, one point behind third-placed Arsenal and level on points with Newcastle.

The uncertainty surrounding Redknapp, added to the poor results, has caused his stock to fall within the club and plans for a four-year contract worth £16 million have been put on ice. A
strong
finish to the season would push his claim for a new deal, with his existing contract set to expire next summer.

“Our minds were made up that Harry was leaving and some exciting ideas were put together about how to take the club forward,” a Tottenham source told Goal.com.

“But there was no outstanding
candidate
and there is little sense in taking a huge gamble on a manager like Rodgers who still has so much to prove. When you look at the bigger picture, Harry has done an excellent job in the last three-and-a-half years.”

Rodgers was sounded out over a move to White Hart Lane after Tottenham accepted Jose Mourinho will stay at Real Madrid for at least one more season. Spurs planned a stringent interview process with the likes of David Moyes and Roberto Martinez also under consideration.

Senior figures at Spurs hope that Redknapp will be able to resolve issues in the squad after receiving complaints from the players, via their agents, about the former Portsmouth manager’s tactics and
match
preparation.

Redknapp has said that he is committed to staying at Tottenham after missing out on the England job and is ready to plan with Levy for the future.

"I've got a great job at Spurs and I'd like to continue that for as long as I can,” he said. “It's up to Daniel whether I get a new contract but I'd like to stay on.

"We've had a few difficult weeks but it's been a great four years. I will plan the future here."

In other news Dan Ashcroft was found inconsolable.

Paolo you just made me spit my coffee out with that pic

I hope Levy still goes ahead and appoints Baldini as he is one of the best DOF out there, make no mistake about that.....!

I reckon we are after Capello to take over next season and not Rodgers. Surely that would be more likely if we are after Baldini. Thats the first time the name has come up and he was also on SSN this morning. Coincidence?

Interesting about Baldini, and note Bear, not a rumour from on here or any other board as far as I'm aware.

Very sensible from Levy if true, of course you're not going to get rid of Harry wherever we finish, how ridiculous would that be??? On the other hand, are you going to give him a contract extension? No effing way!!!!!

The thing about Harry is he's uncontrollable, if you could get him to focus on the job and not on covering his own arse all the time he'd be a hundered times better. The brilliant thing about the current situation is that Harry's just about run out of options, he's not going to get another job at a top club, we are now the pinnacle of what he can achieve in his career, so it's either off into retirement for old Harry, or toe the fucking line for once :) !!!!

Perfect.

So let's keep him on the one year with the carrot that we'll renew if he does well, but the understanding that if he fucks about, gets in a strop, starts playing games, disrespects his employers or the fans etc. then it won't be renewed and it's off to the sunlit uplands of golf and the Sandy Banks retirement home with him.

Win, fucking win!!!!

Apart from the fact Ashcroft has been banging the Baldini drum for about a year you mean?

Oh and was it JJ or Grey Fox that mentioned something about a 'new management structure' this summer?

Who was it that mentioned Levy likes Martinez and Rodgers?

Come on boys, this is the worst kind of journalism you could ever see, next there'll be an article on how we were aware of Hazard being flown over to the City/United, and we're holding talks with Vertonghen.

All spells :barefoot: to me.

Even though I am convinced that it is the wrong thing to do,I can certainly understand why Levy would give Harry another go after this season.

If we do keep him then IMO there definitely needs to be a shake up in our coaching/fitness/tactics.
If that means replacing one or two in of our coaching staff then it needs to be done.
We need people in there strong enough to convince the manager that he is not always right and that playing wide open football is not the only way to skin a cat.

I think it's the most prudent approach we can do now as it allows a distraction-free Harry to prove his worth over a new contract and keep us as a competitive outfit whilst on the other hand, it allows the board to ascertain potential long term suitors to the job in Messrs Rodgers, Lambert & co with the caveat of possibly looking to implement a DoF structure.

Greg Stobart is pretty good when it comes to all things Tottenham so would imagine there is credence to what he says.

Seriously though, if we are keeping Harry why not extend his contract?

Seriously though, if we are keeping Harry why not extend his contract?

Because there are serious question marks over whether he's the long-term answer for our club (more than serious, imo, in fact I'd go as far as to say he definitely isn't), because Harry's got no options any more, because for once we've the whip hand over him. The question should be in fact, why in god's name would we extend his contract!?!
