They play in different positions for starters, Holtby is incapable of playing as part of a Cm2. Doesn't have the brain or temperament to play there.

He is competing with Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Chadli, Soldado etc.

So we're just ruling out the season he did that with Schalke and they finished 3rd?

Cant comment on what he did there, for us though he has shown no discipline in that role. Did he leave his brain in Gelsenkirchen?

So you're going purely on the game when he was put next to Eriksen then. Judging by the comments which have since come out which said Tim doesn't rate holding midfielders and wants both CMs to drop in behind eachother, I would guess that Holtby probably didn't know what exactly he was supposed to be doing. You can't just drop two offensive minded playmakers next to eachother, for the first time without training (as we had a game 3 days before and Tim had only been put in charge leading up to the Soton game) then what do you expect?

If you look at pretty much every other game he played for us in that position, when he was put next to a defensive mid, you'll find his best games for us

Well we will have to disagree because I haven't been too impressed with him any of the times he has played as part of the Cm2, he has no positional appreciation and chases the game too much. The game where he was paired with Eriksen though was the absolute low point and a big part of the blame has to go to the player himself. Where Eriksen at least tried his best to hold his station, play as a pivot and nip in with interceptions when the opportunity was there, Holtby on the other hand just charged around and ran after the ball, as is his way, and we got carved open. I'm sorry Lufti, but at this stage he has a severe lack of the needed mental abilities and appreciation of the role to play as part of a Cm2. As part of a three or in the No.10 role then he has a place, even if he hasn't shown his best form, but Cm2 just looked beyond him at this stage. Maybe he will come back with more experience and make a better fist of it, I hope so. But at this point, not the role for him.

Don't apologise for your opinion mate, you're entitled to it, especially when you put it forwards articulately.

Having seen him play the role at Schalke, I would have to disagree. I personally think he's been a victim of being moved around and not being afforded a run in a singular position for us. I think if he was given a run of games in that position, next to a defensive midfielder, and was allowed to settle in that position and make it his own, then we'd see the best out of him. Hopefully he'll be afforded that chance at Fulham and will be able to impose himself on the league, however judging by the fact that he was deployed at right wing last game, I have my doubts (though he apparently did well there according to Fulham fans).

That bit in bold. Until that happens, I don't think it's fair for anyone to draw any sort of conclusion about his ability. Same can be said about every other player we've purchased, too.

Would Sherwood's golden boy, Bentaleb, have performed so well if he was asked to play in a position that isn't natural or familiar to him? I very much doubt it, and I wait with baited breath for him to be asked to play an 'alien' role. Somehow I just don't think it'll happen though. Funny that!!

Would seem that way as there's no arrow next to my name, which proves that you've just fabricated the quote. Plus I don't use the word shambles

So what word do you use?

Also, has Holtby played much for Fulham yet, and how is he doing?

He's been a victim of AVB imo, just like Sigurdsson, Dempsey, Soldado, Paulinho, Lamela, Eriksen to a certain extent, Adebayor, Malouda, Torres, and Anelka. All played well with the exception of Torres before AVB came along and destroyed their confidence with his ridiculous tactics. Just my opinion, it was good for the defensive players but really bad for anyone trying to be a creative player or score goals.

On the whole I would agree however I would say he changed Bale into a world class star. I don't know how much of that was down to AVB but Bale always seems to credit him a lot. Still, how he handled Lamela was unforgivable in my mind.

True but Bale always was going to become that good. I haven't seen one other attacking player of ours improve under AVB. AVB's "system" imo never allowed our talented attacking players to express their abilities. Bale managed it because so many of his goals came from outside the box and from set pieces. Whereas Rodgers "system" is the exact opposite and thus more successful. The talented attacking players get so much service and space in which to operate.
