He'll go out on loan and hopefully to a championship club. Playing each week will be so valuable for his development

The little of him I've seen he looks to be a Postecoglou prototype midfielder. Bit of everything, great vision, great passing and ability to turn and a shot on him.

I think Maddison will make a big difference. Devine will be able to feature without being the only creative midfielder in the squad which would elevate the pressure.

Am I the only one that would far rather he got opportunities at CAM and RW than Gil? I think he’s a far more promising player. Got so much more to his game

I’ve never seen Devine up against PL level players. So, hard for me to say with any degree of confidence if he has more to his game than Gil. But I assume you have a better line on the player’s capabilities? As I’ve only seen a few minutes of 1st team action and some stuff from the recent U19 Euros.

From the sounds of it, you think he is better by a wide margin? That’s cool. I really has no idea he was already at that level. Brilliant news. Even better, he is one of our own! Can’t wait to see more of him this season. Thanks for sharing, as that’s a really exciting insight.

I wouldn’t say better by a wide margin but he’s only 18 and Gil is 22, I’m thinking more from a who is more worth our time in the long run standpoint. I rate Devine extremely highly and have thought he was nailed on to be a first team player for quite a while. I think he’s absolute class, his touch and control on the ball are super sharp, he scores goals, he makes fantastic runs off the ball, he can spray passes, his ball mastery is very good.. for an 18 year old I can’t see many areas he lacks for quality, for quite a while I’ve felt him being a top player for us will only be delayed by him developing physically, technically I think he’s absolutely superb, he also makes great/fast decisions and is a hard and tenacious worker off the ball.

Different players though and I wouldn't be surprised if Ange finds a place for both of them.
Gil is better out wide and from what I've seen of him, Alfie is better through the middle.
Hard to draw a comparison of the two though because they are completely different styles.

Yeah I know Devine is better centrally but if he was to be kept around the squad I’d personally prioritise his development and give backup minutes on the right and left side to him as well over someone like Gil. I personally think Devine has a much higher ceiling and that Gil isn’t going to cut it here. I think Devine’s going to be really well suited to the quick pass and move football as well, he’s so sharp in everything he does

I can see Devine having a Dele impact when Dele broke through, they both have an edge to them and a great final ball/ eye for goal. Only difference I think Alfie is a much better all arounder.

It's great to have a manager who's going to use the academy! This can only be a good thing

Do we know this for certain? And with no European football surely that reduces opportunities for academy prospects?
We don't, but the signs are hopeful at least. Some of the squad being padded with academy players would be great to see tho

I don't think Ange know anything for certain. And his presser pretty much spelled that out - he is not making any assumptions about anyone, or anything. He has a basic plan, but knows that it will require changes on the fly.

Having said that - I can see a scenario where some youngsters - who show the ability - could stick around to train with the team, but also be given 10-15 minutes at the ends of games.

But, just like under Conte - those minutes would have to be earned, not charity. I think, given the high intensity that Ange seems to like, that he will use all 5 subs, and won't be afraid to put on some youngsters and have them give everything they have for 10-15 minutes. Particularly attacking players, when we may be defending a lead - and energetic pressure is useful.

The main thing is that he gets playing time beyond the youth teams, but thought he would he get a club a bit higher in the English game than a team that finished 18th in League 1 last season.

Don’t know anything about Port Vale. Is this going to be a good fit style wise?

Thing is though, He only turned 19 last week (feels like he's been here forever), and I;d worry that if a lower end championship club struggles, he wont get on the pitch as the manager starts to favour experienced defensive players over young AM's. More important to me he gets as many competitive minutes as possible, you'd think he'd be a starter and key fixture all year at Port Vale.
