Triesman of Tottenham lands FA's top job
Jason Burt 21.12.07

A Government minister linked to the controversies over the Labour Party funding donations scandal has been appointed as the Football Association's first independent chairman.
The choice of Lord Triesman is something of a surprise. The 64-year-old has made it clear that he will resign from his political post, as minister for innovation, to take up his new role. Triesman – whose first name is Brian and who was made a life peer three years ago – has seen off the candidacy of Sir Roy Gardner, the former chairman of Manchester United, who was the other name on the two-man short-list.

Triesman's decision to quit politics has come as a surprise to those who know him although they insist that his commitment to football – he is a season-ticket holder at Tottenham Hotspur, a former youth team player for the club, patron of its foundation and a qualified referee – is unquestionable. Indeed his full title is Lord Triesman of Tottenham.

Lord Triesman has been mentioned in connection with David Abrahams' use of proxy names to make donations to Labour because he was party general secretary at the time, in 2003. However, he has told the FA, in an open letter, that he had no awareness of and no involvement in the controversies and wrote to Lord Mawhinney, the Football League chairman who was head of the four-man selection panel for the FA's independent chair.
Triesman's letter said: "The allegations are wholly untrue. At no time did I know that the donations made in proxy names by Mr Abrahams were in fact his donations or that subterfuge was being used by anyone involved to circumvent the electoral law.
"Had I been made aware at any time of the practice I would have personally notified the Electoral Commission and taken whatever advice they gave me on notifying the police. Inside the organisation it would have been dealt with surgically."

Triesman, who has also been a foreign office minister and who worked his way up through the trades union movement, will take up the post on 16 January, so long as his appointment is ratified by the FA Council.

The selection of an independent chairman to head the organisation, and replace Geoff Thompson, who departs this month, was recommended under the reforms of the Burns report. Previously the FA had appointed from within. Mawhinney is thought to have blocked the candidacy of the former sports minister Richard Caborn, who was keen to take up the newly-created post.

"I am delighted and very honoured to have this remarkable opportunity to help lead change at the heart of English football at the Football Association," Triesman said of his selection. He will take up the salaried post for an initial three-year term and will lead the FA board and work closely with the chief executive, Brian Barwick, chairing general meetings.

We should give him a song at WHL one day, maybe something to do with dodgy donations to the Labour Party.

Good to have a yiddo in this job rather than a Manure fan though.

From The FA

Council today approved Lord (David) Triesman as The FA’s first independent Chairman.
A timetable will now be finalised for when he takes over his new post, succeeding Geoff Thompson.

Lord Triesman was unanimously recommended by The FA Board at its meeting on 19 December 2007. A keen football fan and former grassroots player, coach and referee, he has been a Government Minister since 2004, initially as a Government Whip, then at the Foreign Office and latterly at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.

He said: “It is an exceptional honour to be elected as Chairman of The FA. Having the trust of the people who lead English football gives me an opportunity to develop the game in England at all levels and ensure its future success.

"I am greatly looking forward to combining my deep love of the game with the experience and knowledge I have gained in other areas of professional life.”

FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick said: “I am greatly looking forward to working alongside Lord Triesman as we move into a very exciting time for The FA.

"His experience on politics, business and sport, allied with his knowledge and passion for the game will be of enormous value to the organisation.

“The introduction of an independent chairman is a cornerstone of The FA’s new structure and will greatly help our decision-making processes.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Geoff Thompson and the contribution he has made to The FA as Chairman over the last nine years.”

Geoff Thompson said: “I would like to congratulate Lord Triesman and I wish him every success when he takes on the role. We will now work out a timetable for a smooth handover.”

How do you know ? Are you his best mate ?

OK two things:

1. Lets hope he's not one of the 99% of members of the Labour party who are complete and utter muppets. I think the Blair-Brown period will be remembered for having promoted the most people quite blatantly beyond their ability (Brown himself, Alistair Darling, John Prescott, Harriet Harmen, Frank Dobson, Ken Livingstone to name a few

2. What has happened to the Dark Lord of the Sith David Dein. Is he going to try to influence referees from the safety of his members club now ? Could this be the turning point (the return of the Jedi so to speak....) ?

I'm pretty sure he's 'Old' Labour, definitely not one of the Islington set. Not that I've had much to do with the party ever since it mutated into 'New' Labour.

couldn't let this one go by. GB is probably one of the shrewdest politicians this country has seen. may agree with the rest though!

He sounds like an SWP/agitprop/marxist/leninist..to me

That'll do.

Why should the devil have the best tunes. And ask him to find out how Dein got that Arsenal match at Portsmouth postponed because of rain 2 seasons ago

Nope not my mate he went to Lancs school but I will forgive him that.
Has been a Spurs fan all his life, did you see the interview with him in one of the programmes last year?
Can't see any point commenting on politics if you start off like that, and by the way he had fuck all to do with any possible dodgy funding, this fact is accepted by everyone except, it seems, the poxy liberal chattering classes at the Independant.
Did you notice I used the F word twice there, that's how angry I get about the Fucking Independant, sod it that's three times.

I believe you are right SS57.
