No idea how reliable the source is, but looking at their twitter page it looks like the Portuguese equivalent of The Sun!
People need to stop taking these bullshit twitter aggregators at face value. The article is behind a paywall, but the first paragraph says that “Diaz wont lose his mind and try to force a move.”

That’s very different from not being interested at all.

Surely the first thing we do before making a bid is check if the player is interested?
I think it in most cases we probably do both at the same time. We ask agents, hey does your player fancy playing for us? Oh premier league club, who knows dude who knows. All right he didn't say no, let's ask Porto about the price. But in media we see: Tottenham MADE VERY OFFICIAL AND FINAL OFFER for Porto player. Then the agents says, yeah my player wants Premier League but Spurs? We are not so sure dude. And twitter journos says: Diaz DEFINITELY REJECTED SPURS. At least that's how I imagine it.

Add to this Porto need cash.

Do we have it though? Two years of heavy losses and seems like all of our transfers now are loans with obligations to buy to avoid cash flow issues. If they need liquid cash up front then the only way that happens is if we find buyers (not loans) for some of our unwanted players

We sound out the player.
The player asks his agent.
The agent says, he can attract a bigger club, but play along to flush out interest.
Player says yes in principle.
We make a bid.
Club rejects our offer.
Player's agent leaks fee details.
Player's agent leaks stories to indicate, whilst interested in a move to the PL, the player would prefer a move to a CL club.
Liverpool or ManU step in.

It's probably one where the likes of Liverpool have let him know they are interested, which is likely a preferred destination over us. They tell the player they might bid for him, it's then down to him.

We speak to the agent who says they are interested, wages etc... seem doable but Spurs are not his top destination.

Paratici then decides to test that resolve by actually making a serious bid. Then the player really has to think about it. Do you turn down something tangible on the off chance Liverpool actually pay up for you in the summer? It may pay off sometimes. Had Juve not spent their entire 2022 budget on Vlahovic I think he goes to us or Arsenal.

Granted it didn't work for Kounde and Torres. Kounde clearly had Chelsea in his ear and they'd just won the CL. I think Torres would have signed for us had they not been in the CL or had already played it in the prior year. We also had Nuno as manager back then and not Antonio Conte, who is likely a bigger pull.

Ambition is actually signing a player of this Calibre! Not just putting in low ball bids every window for this type of calibre player in the vain hope it will be accepted! Then trotting out the usual exercises when the deal doesn’t happen of how the deal was too hard to do as the selling club were being unreasonable, or we were being played by an agent . Or our new favourite putting in a bid for a player without even finding out if he would be interested in joining us as was the case in the summer and potentially the case now with Diaz.

I don't disagree with you, I'm just personally bored of reading the same "wE tRiEd" comments before we've even got to the point of it not happening.

I'm not necessarily saying we are being ambitious by trying (and failing) but you can bet your ass that we'd be called unambitious if we weren't even bidding in the first place.

Football Manager has ruined people's perceptions of things. They think that scouts can just put on an "interested" filter when browsing to see in advance if it's worthwhile.

Even if you did sound out a player - they could easily say "thanks for the offer but am going to wait to the end of the window and see what other offers come in" and get their agent on the front foot to see if they can drum up some alternatives. Give them some time to do their research properly, speak to friends and international team mates about what life is like in London, what it's like playing for Conte etc. Just because they're not salivating at the mouth like a starving dog when they first hear of the transfer interest doesn't mean that they can't be convinced to come.

It does mean though that you'll get emotionally unstable twats all over the internet writing about how it's a "disgrace" that the deal hasn't been pulled off yet if it's not done by close of play today though.

I can't recall which publications are reliable and which aren't in Portugal but I would surprised if this were true and rather it's more likely to be a piece to appease Porto fans.
Depends on the club. Record are very good with Sporting, but also tend to be pro-sporting. A Bola the same, but with Benfica. For example.

Record reporting on Porto could be good info, but more likely than not they’re just trying to get involved in the conversation.

I don't get the whole wait until the summer thing. Sure if your contract is up in the summer but if not why would teams not come for him now. If Liverpool really want him there's nothing stopping them making a move now. People were saying the same about Vlahovic but Juve coughed up now.

The 'we tried' brigade are really getting stuck into this thread. It's almost as if Ndombele and Romero never happened, although to be fair that would be an easy mistake to make given the amount of game time they've had.

We do have a history of making huge bids for players only to get rejected by the player (Aguero when at A.Madrid and even that famous Rivaldo letter!). Do hope this is bollocks though, as he looks awesome.

People love to bring up Ndombele as a shining example of ‘see ENIC do spend big!’ and quietly ignore the fact that we were so willing to push the boat out bc CL final prize money as well as literal years of not spending. Romero is a slightly better example but even then he’s on loan.
