My view? Spurs tried to sneak this one under the radar and complete it quickly. Diaz’s agents were up for it but leaked the spurs contact to tease out any ‘bigger’ clubs in the prem, likely knowing Liverpool we’re keen. It’s worked. Well played Diaz’s camp. Don’t think it’s necessarily a reflection on us/our dealings. It’s frustrating as hell but is sometimes what can happen when you’re fishing for big names but aren’t yourself the biggest fisherman at the pond. What I do believe is that there will be something/one lined up that will quickly leak now into the weekend. We move on.
Pretty much agree, although if trying to go under the radar you need to nail it at first attempt with your best offer To close it quickly. As you say hopefully club has other options lined up.

Liverpool far more attractive option for players.

Yes, they have a top manager like us but they're not afraid to splash the cash, don't take years to do deals when the cash is there and are a stable club. Also, they WANT trophies and have won them. I'm really struggling to see that desire from us at the moment.

Levy best chairman in the World? I think not, he's put people off to the point where by we're now starting to decline. And honestly, don't be surprised if Conte walks, not saying he will, but I really am struggling to see why he would stay.

Edit: others are right, we got played by Diaz camp and played well but still, this isn't the first time we 'nearly signed a Worldie' and it won't be the last

I agreed with all of this until this line.

I'm not totally convinced we've got something else lined up, I think we saw an opportunity to steal a march and sign this guy but ultimately have fallen short.

But of course, I hope we do. I'm a bit more concerned about our midfield at present, to be honest.

I really want to see the excuses that get trotted out this time. Or am I bedwetting?

It will be Mendes fault or the player or the agents. Its not bed wetting to criticise the club for consitently making the same mistake but hold your anger in for a few days. We still have time to rectify it all.

The only issue here really is the timing. Whatever is happening would've happened however Spurs acted, Liverpool have a long standing interest and acted on what was happening. It just would've been handy it happening a couple of weeks ago.

Liverpool have been strongly linked to him, I suspect this is all a play to get Liverpool back to the table. Yes, I am a seasoned fan scorned by previous windows of impotency and false hope. Shoot me now.
As per what I said the other day. Such a shame, but very predictable.

It's hard not to roll out the "We tried" stuff and every other cliche line but who can blame us? It seems to be true a lot of the time. I'm fully bed wetting. Literally standing up and pissing everywhere. Morning everyone.

You’re bed wetting.

It’s clear Liverpool made their move as soon as they realised he might go to us - they had already been tracking him for 6 months. Once they come to
The party there is nothing we can do. The agent is always going to hawk the player around when he realises the club is willing to sell. Liverpool are a bigger club than us. That’s just facts.

Theres more chance of me lining up for Spurs than us signing Diaz (or any big expensive player) a few weeks into a transfer window

I’d be genuinely surprised at this point if it’s any more than Amrabat announced about an hour before the window closes.

This was always going to happen. Been a Liverpool target for a while and was always going to choose them over us.

If you are not a title challenging team then you have to overpay quite a lot on wages to get these sorts of guys. We are never going to do that which makes you wonder why the club would bother targeting players like this that are not going to join.

In order to sign good players we need to have better scouting and actually be prepared to act fast, rather than try and eek out every saving. It just shows that we continue to value the P&L account over what happens on the pitch.

It’s not bed wetting to say that football has changed and ENIC haven’t. They will continue to act like an investment company because that’s what they are. We will continue to crave success because that is not the primary objective of the football club.
