You got the Luuk: Premier League big guns chasing FC Twente striker

Luuk de Jong has attracted interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham are all chasing 21-year-old rising Dutch star Luuk de Jong.

The Holland international, who played against England at Wembley in February, scored 32 goals this season for Steve McClaren’s FC Twente.

De Jong, 6ft 2ins tall and the younger brother of Ajax striker Siem de Jong, is the son of Olympian parents.
Luuk was only 19 when he helped McClaren win his first championship with FC Twente in Holland.
Last weekend a posse of scouts from the Premier League went over to Holland to watch the striker in action.

Everton’s David Moyes, Newcastle’s Alan Pardew, delegations from Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs were at the sold-out game between FC Twente and Heerenveen. They saw De Jong score twice for McClaren’s team.
Around Christmas the young hitman sent FC Twente to the top of the Dutch league with 12 goals in eight games.
In the last two seasons the player has scored 62 goals.

McClaren says his striker is one of the best talents he has worked with in his career.

The manager said: “Luuk is an ‘English style’ striker, made for English football. I am just desperate to keep him one more year in Holland. But I realise that will be difficult.

“Luuk is big, strong, brilliant in the air and scores goals so easily. He has every quality a top class striker needs to have for a big club.”

FC Twente president Joop Munsterman admits there is interest for his striker and that the club may not be able to stop him from leaving.

The club have already offers of £12million from German clubs Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen. The player, however, wants to move to England.

He has listened to the advice of McClaren, who has told him he will become a big hit in the Premier League.
Munsterman said: “We want to keep Luuk. He is a vital player if we want to win the championship again next season and when we play in Europe.

“We have said that we won’t go lower than £12.5m as a transfer fee. We need a top price for a top player.’’
Former Dutch international Patrick Kluivert, McClaren’s No.2 at FC Twente, added: “Luuk [de Jong] is going to be the No.1 striker for Holland in the very near future.

“He has everything a striker needs.

“Here at FC Twente we are grooming him for a future with one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

“He can become a European giant.’’

Dutch strikers have good pedigree, so for 12 ml it's not a big risk. Sign him.

Hmmm, not sure.

I hear and read great things, but the limited matches I've seen him in, I've not been impressed. But he is young...

We cannot attract the very top top players ( wages ) , but we can sign them young and develop them at our club into top top players ( Bale, Modric, Kaboul ) , I think this player could be one of those.

Take van Persie for example. He was not great at 21 and now he is one hell of a striker( one hell of an arsehole unfortunately)

I agree. We can't buy genuine, already there, world class players. We could buy safe, premiership-proven players like Bent but we know the limit of their ability. Buying a young talent that is already scoring goals is the right way forward for us.

I've never seen De Jong, but the striker I'd love is Lewandowski.

Yeap I'd take both

We will not sign Adebayor, Saha will only be a squad filler when fit and Defoe just isn't consistent enough

Looks to be very good with both feet. That would be refreshing. If Ade is unrealistic get De Jong in alongside Remy. Sounds feasible.

Seen little of him and haven't been particularly impressed. Deselina apparently doesn't rate him which is interesting

You gotta wonder about Bas Dost. Haven't seen anything from him but he'll soon be 23 years old, and leads the Eredivisie in scoring this season with 31 goals. A big unit aswell

I been saying we should sign him for 18 months now, exactly the type of players we need and we can get. Forget chasing the likes of cavani as we will never get them, he is realistic and will become a huge star!!!

Not sure he'll ever be world class, but I do like him every since we faced him in the Champions League.
Great attitude to the game and work rate

Lewandowski will still be at Dortmund I guess.

I hope we sign a half decent striker at some point although I half expect us to keep on going with the short term, half arsed attempts to fill the role.
