Manager before players or players before manager?

Yeah, well, we'll never know if the manager actually legitimately approved them, or if they just 'approved' them. How have we in the past, actually heard that our manager at the time has approved them? Do they actually say in front of the camera?

How have we heard they haven't? ITK?

Sherwood said that AVB approved them. When asked about if he would take any player he didn't approve he said no, he wouldn't play them. David Pleat was interviewed on TAlksport when Baldini arrived and was aked how it would work. He said that AVB, Baldini and Fruend would sit down and discuss which players to bring in.
AVB was the one who requested Baldini in the first place.

Just because we do not always get a managers first choice of player doesn't mean the manager has no say. If we did always get a managers first choice we'd probably have Ronaldo and Messi then be bankrupt by Friday.

it didn't make sense in the context of DOF. So then, how have we managed to get that sort of squad? And what do you actually mean by "impressive"

We have a squad which includes the French number 1, Ajax's former captain, 2 Brazilian international midfielders, Ajax's most creative player from the season before, an Argetine wonderkid who has been a star player for River Plate and Roma and a host of other internationals.

We have put that together with around zero net spend in the last 5 years and all within budget.

If you don't think Baldini had an input in us signing Lamela, Eriksen, Paulinho and Soldado last summer then I don't know what to say to you.

I'm impressed by the quality of our squad.

We can't afford ready made world class players so need to buy players with potential that are not so well known. This is the dof and scouts job.

If Poch signed tomorrow and said I need a left back sign me Shaw. It will be Baldini's job to point out that we couldn't afford him as he is probably off to Man Utd, but then offer cheaper alternatives. They would then discuss the merits of each and make a decision then Baldini will try and sign him. If it falls through they go down the list.

Exactly. The DOF system isn't the problem. It's how you implement it and if you get a head coach who wants a DOF and a DOF who can provide the head coach with what he requires.

There are countless examples of teams with a simple manager system in place are unsuccessful in the transfer market so don't know why we are so critical of the concept like it can't work full stop.

Also need good scouts. Am glad that Broomfield is back.

Because there have been countless players in the past who have impressed at World Cups; who have subsequently been the subject of a mad transfer scramble among clubs that haven't really thought properly about how well suited that player is to their club, their league and their country; and who have consequently proved to be very poor buys.

No club should ever buy a player on the back of his performances during a four week international tournament. It's a completely different environment and test to a nine month season with a club.

Far better to buy players BEFORE they get the chance to impress at a World Cup. They'll be cheaper. But if, for whatever reason, Spurs are to buy a player (or players) after impressing at the coming World Cup, then I sincerely hope that it will only be because we were already very keen on that player before the World Cup and had thoroughly done our homework on him.

Indeed. We got Modric before he had a stormer and was named in the team of the tournament at Euro 08. If we'd waited till after I imagine we wouldn't have got him.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

You mean Baldini's committee? So a Director of football committee, which not every club has. So of course it works that way with most clubs, where a manager has the primary responsibility for identifying the players which THEY want. Why does it need to be strictly only in a 'perfect' world?
It's an interesting thread but let's not forget that Levy has tried just about every type of combination when it comes to the playing structure and has yet to find something that works definitively.

If Bale were to be suddenly available for transfer and indicates he'd like to return to WHL, you don't wait for the manager; you just sign him asap.

I think it's only in England that people think the manager is solely responsible for signing the players.

But I can only think of one player in that list that most fans would call a success this season.
