Jose has been to two European finals and won one since he left us. Sevilla beat him in that final with a counter attacking side. How many European titles have they won in that time though? They’ve been beaten by more progressive, attacking tactics every single time they’ve stepped into the knockout rounds of the UCL.
As a whole, Italian football follows that defence first mindset but it’s still an exception to the general rule that modern, successful teams all employ some form of an attacking/progressive style of play. Although There will always be one or two exceptions to every rule.
David Moyes has also won a European trophy in that same time period.
It would seem only the Champions League favours attacking teams on its finals. With Madrid, Liverpool, Bayern, City etc winning it in recent years.
This suggests of you want to win things with an attacking approach, you have to be the absolute epitome of that approach.
There are no underdog attacking sides that win anything.
However, Chelsea, have won the CL within the last 5ish years with a defensive approach as the underdog.
This isn't to request a change in style. Just to point out that only the VERY BEST attacking sides win in Europe.
If you're an underdog, then you are far more likely to win by focussing on defence.
