Having just read that Marquez might be one of the players Barca are willing to let go this summer do you not think he is the perfect player for spurs to pick up. Experienced leader, equally adept at playing defensive mid or in the centre of defence, could plug a lot of gaps in the spurs team. Lack of pace but reads the game as well as anyone out there, he's always impressed me when i've seen him play. Imagine how solid it would be with the awareness of woody and ledders at cb and marquez at dm, with him able to slot in at the back when one of them is injured. Just a thought?

He's getting on a bit but yes he could be good as our new Naybet. Dont think he's got the legs to play DM anymore though.

This should be in general footy by the way as there's no link to Spurs.

He's only 29 I think, and I think he'd be an awesome buy at a cut price. His experience of CL and top level football would be invaluable to some of the younger players. I would prefer to see him in DM, also, he's a good free kick taker. Meaning that we would have him and Bale on free kicks.

Didn't realise that Barca were willing to let him go, he would be a perfect addition to our team at a good price, and would help Dos Santos settle in quicker i'd imagine.

I could see Milan going after him actually, they love a good experienced defender and they have been linked with him previously. and he is only 29, hardly over the hill just yet!

As a follower of Barca i have to disagree. I dont rate him very highly at all. He only really plays defensive midfield because he has the tendancy to make really poor errors. That way, he has defenders behind him to try and recover the situation. I would seriously have Zokora over him.

I think Veloso is a good target for defensive midfield, but he would be too expensive. So i would go for De La Red. I think he's realistic and could be ours for no more than £12m. I was very impressed with him for Getafe last season. I can imagine how well we'd keep the ball with Modric and De La Red in midfield.

And as a follower of Barcelona (I live here and go to all of their home matches) and the Mexican national team (I used to live there and followed them at the Confederations Cup and World Cup etc), I have to disagree. Marquez has been below his best for the last couple of seasons, but so has the entire team.

He was superb as a DM in the 2004-2005 season, when he replaced the departed Davids, who had been a revelation in that position the previous year.

He was also excellent in both midfield and defence as Barcelona won the Champions League in 2006, starring in the games against Chelsea, when he was solid in defence and set up Eto'o's winner with a brilliant cross at Stamford Bridge.

He is not the quickest, but his reading of the game is first-class, he knows how to tackle, can shoot, is a great header and most importantly of all, he is someone who can bring the ball out of defence or distribute from midfield thanks to his great technical ability.

He is also Mexico's captain and would come with a lot of experience. That said, he has said repeatedly that if he leaves Spain it will be to play in Italy. Atletico (coached by fellow Mexican Javier Aguirre) are interested too and he could well go there, especially as his girlfriend lives in Madrid.

I would really love to see him at the lane, but no way hell we'll get him and it sound stupid that they would be even selling him as Puyol will move back to right as Zambrotta went to Milan and Marquez back to his best role as CB... so maybe this thread should be moved to General footie as it has not anything to do with Spurs.... yet

I thought they'd just signed Dani Alves, so surely he'd play at right back and nothing will change for Marquez or Puyol.

Why will Puyol go to RB when Barca have just signed Alves?

I don't know what his recent performances have been like in fairness, unlike some other people here, but i put his name up as a possible target last summer. I personally would not mind him being at Spurs.

Moreover, given his spanish/mexican connection, would he not also serve a purpose as being someone that would help Dos Santos settle maybe as well as attract other big(!) names to us?? He will also bring experience to what is still a fairly young squad.

Just a thought.

Show off.

Although my TV doesn't lie. It would be nice to have Spanish football in high def though. I haven't seen him play consistently well for quiete some time now though.

Yeah, he was good two years ago i admit. If he can return to form then he'd be a good signing for us.

Marquez is an outstanding player but, as other regular Barca watchers have said, he was very error-prone last season. At his best, he's a Rolls Royce of a player, whose excellent reading of the game makes up for his lack of pace.

I suspect Barca may let him go. Guardiola has so many CMs now - Xavi, Iniesta, Keita, Yaya Toure (who seems to be staying) - that I can't see Marquez playing in midfield, and presumably the new big money signing Caceres will partner Puyol at CB until Gaby Milito has recovered from his ligament injury.

He'd be good I reckon, and another Mexican to go with Gio. Fernando Meira's a similar type of player I'd like at the Lane as well. Get em both please, Levy.

I liked Marquez a couple fo seaons back when he was regularly the DM, I thought he played excellently. He was very good on the ball, always in the right position, wasnt afraid to cover a centre back nor get forward a bit. If we could get him for the right price I would be very interested to see him at the Lane.
