A strange game really. Gomes was mostly pretty poor. Modric had a very bad game. Corluka's passing was awful. VDV was subdued.

However Gallas, Dawson and Benny were great at the back, and obviously Sandro was quite simply outstanding.

Overall this was a pretty average performance from the team, but in fairness they were not playing with any huge pressure to score.

Gomes- 6
Corluka-6
Dawson-7
Gallas-7.5
BAE-7.5
Lennon-7
Sandro-9
Modric-6.5
Pienaar-7
VdV-6
Crouch-7

Bale-6
Pav-6
Jenas-6.5

Some will call the ratings i've given stingy. We are however rating the performance, not the result.

You're comparing a pretty sturdy defensive performance and clean sheet against a side top of the italian league to a game in which we went 3-0 down in 45mins to a terrible side?

I am saying we were like rabbits in the headlights for a lot of the game.

It says something about Sandro's performance tonight that I have been surprised and disappointed whenever somebody has given him less than 10. I can honestly say I've never felt that way before, giving some indication to just how mercurial (definitely the word) I thought he was tonight.

The result was great. The performance was extremely anxious, the gameplan one-dimensional.

Perhaps you could describe a two-dimensional gameplan, and then really go for broke and describe a three-dimensional one. Then you could progress to explaining what you think the original gameplan actually was, and finally impress us with your ability to distinguish between shit and a blue ball.

You'd be better appreciated on Arsenal-Mania.

Gomes made two good saves, distributed badly once or twice, was generally solid.

Corluka was fine, a little shaky int he first half but great in the second.

Gallas seemed so nervouss at points it's untrue.

Dawson had his best game for a while.

Ekotto seems a touch below par. He's not using the ball at the moment, just hoofing, which is noticable because he's so good on the ball. I reckon he's not 100%.

Lennon was the one attacking player to come away with any real credit. Many good crosses.

Sandro was just plain immense. Definitely first choice for the DM position right now.

Modric didn't waste the ball at all, but he just wasn't himself tonight. Still coming back from injury I reckon.

Pienaar was pretty good, and without his industry we might have been fucked in the middle tonight.

VDV had probably his poorest game for us. He didn't seem tired, just not sharp. I reckon we cotton wooled him too much and he lost match fitness.

Crouch, well you've got to worry when your centre forward has a free header two yards from goal and tries to lay it off for a player who isn't there.

Jenas had me tearing my hair out the amount of times he put us under pressure out of nothing in ways that only he can.

Bale looked confident and definitely scared the shit out of them judging by his 9000 markers.

Pavlyuchenko came on, looked a little lazy, did one beautiful thing and had his name chanted. All in a night's work.

I'm finding it hard to rate anyone but Sandro and Gallas, who I thought were superb (Sandro 10 out of 10, Gallas 8 out of 10, for me)... so, erm... here we go...

Gomes - 6 (some iffy moments, but some good saves too, scared me at times)

Corluka - 6 (some good moments, but also gave the ball away as we struggled to retain possession, good performance given his lack of game time due to injury)
BAE - 7 (decent game, no major scary BAE moments)
Gallas - 8 (excellent again, marshalled the defence and was excellent throughout)
Dawson - 7 (less than Gallas due to a few moments of iffy positional stuff to allow Ibra in)

Lennon 7 - (constant thorn in the side of ACM, didn't do enough though, lacked a little end product)
Pienaar - 6 (not enough from him, gave the ball away a lot, expect better)
Sandro - 10 (immense, perfect performance, broke up a lot of ACM attacks, looked to break forward, barely gave the ball away when those about them lost their heads. Excellent, I'm genuinely excited about how he'll progress)
Modric 7 (we expect more from the little magician, but didn't have a bad game on reflection, needed to get involved more though, I guess)

VDV 6 (looked rusty and off the pace)

Crouch 7 (good performance, his knock downs may have reached a match fit VDV who struggled to get on the end of stuff. A few frustrating moments where he perhaps should have headed at goal rather than selflessly trying to assist others)

Subs:

Did their job no problem. Bale gave the ball away a couple of times and hoped for more from him, but he's obvioulsly no where near match fit.

We now have a few weeks (how many?) to get our walking wounded back 100% fit for the Quarters. Yes that's right. We're in the mother-fucking Quarter Finals of the Champions League! How good does that feel?! YEAH!

COYS!!!

I thought someone of your scintillating wit would at least serve up a more imaginative insult.

AC Milan are a huge name but their current side is nothing to shout about.

Sandro 10 and Gallas 10 for that goal line save which wasn't easy with the height of the ball and Robinho storming in.

But their name came out of the bag, and we beat them over the 2 legs, Job done. Quarter finals here we come.

Cheer up and enjoy it........we have waited a bloody long time to get here.

Couldn't we have a poll for this? Its more fun. Could we have one for every game?
I would vote for Sandro obviously but Gallas also immense.

Not a great performance but we ground out a result. For all Milan's possession, they created very little. We seem to have too many players carrying injuries or lacking match fitness (Corluka, VdV, Bale, Modric). Surprised that Harry didn't have Palacios on the bench; we could have used him when the midfield was being overrun. We gave the ball away too easily.

Gomes 5 - Some poor decision-making and typically bad distribution. Lucky not to give away a goal. Scares the life out of me.

Corluka 7 - Looked to be struggling but more solid at the back than Hutton.

Gallas 8 - Got turned a couple of times but compensated with great goal-line clearance.

Dawson 7 - Solid but poor distribution.

BAE 7 - See Dawson.

Lennon 6.5 - Milan doubled up on him making it difficult for him to make a major impression. Perhaps, he should have tried swapping wings to throw off his markers but he was probably under orders not to.

Sandro 8.5 - MoM. What a prospect he is.

Modric 6 - Ineffective. Not a great day at the office.

Pienaar 6.5 - Worked hard but his lack of pace is a concern,

VdV 4 - Clearly not fit. Should have come off sooner.

Crouch 7 - For effort but got no favours from the ref. Should have gone for goal when he had the chance at the start of the second half.

This.

Plonked a great ball right onto Crouch's head and also another first time ball with his right in the 2nd half that I think again found Crouch, was also a couple of other clipped in crosses that found Crouch.

It was an unbelievable goal line clearance. We can definitely thank it for our presense amongst this seasons European top 8!
