Tottenham defender Matt Doherty is set to join Atletico Madrid on loan until the end of the season with no option or obligation to buy.

The 31-year-old has made 16 appearances for Spurs this season.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte has preferred Emerson Royal at right-back with the London club also close to signing Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.

Having to choose between him and Emerson, I would have kept him and sent Emerson out. Just seems more capable as a wing back.

True, although Emerson is the better defender, so an Emerson and Porro combo could complement each other better for different types of games.

TBH I'm so dejected about Spurs as a whole, that I almost don't care. We'll see how it pans out. Not holding my breath. Sending Spence and Gil on loan was a bit of a kick in the teeth. How are they supposed to fit into the system if they are not here to learn it? Spence was brought in to be a wing back and he is now sent away while another RWB is brough in. Why did we bother with Spence then?

I think they took a punt on Spence, he was cheap and like Rodon and Clarke, if it doesn’t pan out, it doesn’t cost much.

The Doc has been pretty poor for the majority of the time he’s been here, he’s the oldest and of least transfer value. Royal is kind of a Brazilian international and worth more should they decide to sell him next season, loaning him makes him worth less.

Very interesting if this goes through. Trippier was transformed from very good PL full back to absolute beast and La Liga winner by his move there. He's probably been the best/most influential defender in the PL since his return.

I can't suggest Doherty has a similar ceiling, but it's an intriguing move and good luck to him. A new culture in many ways will be great for him.

And if he does become a beast of a full back, you have to wonder what we're up to as a club and a sporting culture. At least he comes back to us if that happens!

Hey dude.. chin up.. We HAVE to find a way to be positive.. this is meant to be the fun part of life! It's a journey. no matter what we fix, there will be more to fix. We are a top 6 club, with stability. We'll bounce up and down a bit and there will be better days than these.. But even at the end of th bad ones, we have the club the history, the memories, the craziness, the soap opera, and eachother. Life would be easier without spurs, but not as much of an experience :)

Wow. That is a shock. Good move for him though. Wish him well. Was playing top draw for Wolves until he joined the cluster fuck that is Spurs. See him doing a Trippier.

We just need to get rid of the owners.

BBC reporting that newish EUFA rules limit a club to loaning out a max of eight players. Doc would have been number 9. BBC list the other eight!
