Having only just woken up after an epic return journey last night I haven't had time to search through the site yet to see if anyone else has noticed it so apologies if its already ben covered.

When it was 1 nil and the game seemingly in the bag, their right back who had been booked minutes earlier hacked down Mason on the edge of the box. The Referee gave the free kick and reached into his pocket to give him a fully deserved yellow card, he then quickly realised that Flynn had already been booked and took his hand out of his pocket i.e bottling it.

Fast forward a few minutes and Flynn the man who should have been sent off puts in a peach of a cross to bring the equaliser. Now luckily it didn't matter in the end but had we gone out last night I wonder if there would be as much fuss been made as with Costa the night before?

Swings and roundabouts.... There were a couple of times when one or two of our players who had already been booked still made silly challenges.
Also, on other days we could have seen Vertonghen sent off for putting hands round Basham's throat.

Yes I noticed that and he had a word with the player as well. But Verts was lucky not to receive any punishment at all. I thought Dean was going to give him a yellow but seemed to forget about it after the medics had been on. Although he did book Basham, He's certainly got the right name from that tackle:D

We got very little in the whole match IMO. Two clear corners were given as goal kicks in the second half, all second half of 50/50 challenges went there way and they got a couple of throws that were never theirs either. I guess that's kind of natural for the neutral, subconciously you want to make a game out of it. Very poor showing yet again though, can't remember us getting a decision that wasn't absolutely stone wall.

You're right though, he bottled that big one and I felt he was really looking for an excuse to off one of our booked players.

I don't like to see red cards though, especially in those instances.
We should not be reliant on them getting us out of trouble either. Referees are always in the firing line, either for ruining matches with being overzealous with the cards or for then not following the strictest letters of the law.

Flynn didn't get sent off, Vertonghen also didn't get sent off... we won the tie.

Big mistakes like the no goal against Sunderland for offside, those need criticising, but last night I thought Mike Dean was ok. Not fantastic, but good enough.

The rules are the rules and he certainly should have been sent off for a second yellow.

Too much inconsistency.

All aside, I do enjoy that Vertonghen and Fazio before him (the Palace match maybe?) stand up for their teammates and give opponents some verbal and physical abuse.

Predictably, my gooner friends went haywire over "****onghen". Which shows that the days of Keown, Vieira, Adams and so forth are long forgotten. Say what you will about those guys, but they didn't shy away from a fight and stood up for their teammates and had some edge about them.

Seeing our players getting in peoples faces is an encouraging sign.

The referee was incidental to the story of last night. I'm sure that Sheff Utd fans could point to plenty of incidents which they feel went against them. But, overall, Dean had an alright game and made no obvious howlers. So not worth talking about him in the aftermath.

Far rather talk about our professional showing for the first 75 or so, our spursy collapse for ten minutes and the excellent goal which sealed our progress. Both teams and sets of fans were a credit.

As should Bashan for lunging in boots first on Vorm who had the ball in his hands.

Did Basham make the contact that Vorm made it out to be?! Nope....
There was no facial contact whatsoever.

We would have praised Kane for chasing down a lost cause like that, and Vorm was incredibly slow to react.

Who knows what would/could have happened.
They could have had Flynn sent off, felt harshly treated, been galvanised as a team and pushed on to score 2 goals with no response.

You can never say "If X had hapenned, then Y wouldn't have happened" or vice versa as there's nothing to prove what would really happen.
It's like saying Liverpool would have gone on to beat Chelsea if Costa had been sent off. There's nothing anywhere that would be able to prove that.

Vorm had the ball in his hands and Basham kicked right through his hands kicking the ball out of his hands, he didn't need to do it as he saw Vorm had gathered the ball, it was avoidable and deliberate.
Basham kicked ball and boot into Vorms chin so I'm not sure how Vorm made it out to be anything but what it was, there was definitely facial contact, plus what was he doing jerking his head back and going down like that, just cheating. I don't make romantic excuses just because Sheffield United are plucky little underdogs, it was out of order not to say damgerous.

I suppose if all decisions were carded, many teams could end up with hardly any players on the pitch!

I noticed that and was surprised the ref changed his mind after reaching for his card.

Verts pissed me off. No need to go for someone's throat.

It helped that the player basically fainted as soon as Verts hand touched him - even he looked embarrassed afterwards.

Verts was lucky though - I thought he'd go at that point
