I know he's really not the flavour of the month amongst our fan base but I'll always wonder how he dropped off so much from his 2015-2017 form. I guess the easy explanation was Dembele leaving and Wanyama's injuries. But I still remember games where he played without them and was still brilliant.

A real shame since his attitude has always been top class.
He also had his own health issues. The injuries and illness set him back big time.

Yep- I thought he was a future Spurs ad England captain. You cant fault his attitude... just his ability sadly.

I think it's both - his attitude towards his ability. He seems crippled by a lack of "I can be better" about him, based on what he says.
He also seems to be one of those that is more interested in intellectual pursuits, so I wonder whether he's anywhere near as committed and focused on his football career as Kane etc.

Bit like Dele, in that they seemed to peak quite young and hit a brick wall in development - seems Dele's realised that though.

I think it's good to have older experienced players around who can say "it goes quick - don't regret it", and Pjanic seems like he might have some of that wisdom about him

He sounds like a deep-lying play-maker.

EDIT: This video seems to indicate that. Lots of balls from deep:

What is there not to like? Solves multiple problems immediately
1) reduce reliance of toby’s / cb’s + another option for long range passing which makes us more press resistant.
2) reduce reliance on Kane dropping deep to play these balls to the runners
3) makes players more willing to run into space knowing a good accurate ball is going to come. Nobody is making good penetrative runs when Sissoko is on the ball for eg
4) allows both wingbacks to remain high and wide as options and pegs teams back as they worry about being bypassed and use play to the strengths of regi and doherty
5) complements Dele very well. I don’t have the stats but I’m quite sure most of dele’s goals were assisted by Eriksen>Toby>Kane and Sonny.
6) ps edit: and yes of cos, free kicks and set pieces

I’m sure you guys rem PEH’s assist to Aurier against Man U. With Pjanic, these balls gonna happen more frequently.

For those of you (unlike myself) who has followed him in Italy/Spain - how do you reckon that he will cope with the fast and furious PL tempo? Or do you believe that we would just build the midfield around him (regardless of his fitness levels), and basically just play him with two water carriers in CM to compensate? Something which perhaps could be worthwhile for players like Pjanic (or Ndom) who can actually beat oppo’s press.

It’s a really interesting link. I think he is past his best but it still lines up with Paratici and Nuno. Paratici has done a lot of work in the free transfer market and is clearly good at signing players for bargains. Nuno really likes his midfield to distribute the ball quickly and not hold it in midfield. It’s all about collecting it and playing it out. He has Mourinho doing it and Pjanic is an upgrade on him but is it enough of an upgrade for us? He definitely has the early pass or one-time pass in him and I can see a player like Son thriving from his early balls out from deep. It’s also allow Hojbjerg to play a little more progressively and try to win the ball back higher up. He looked a little lost trying to do that last year and was better defensively when he was marshaling in front of defence but maybe that was because he had no cover when he was trying to hunt for the ball and our back line was so deep that teams could play around Hojbjerg too easily.

I think the style of player is right for what Nuno will want to do, just not sure if he is the right option for it.

Just be listening to Andy Brassle on Talkshite. The guy is on £14m per season. He was getting booed by the Barca fans yesterday. Barca want rid but can't offload him as no one will pay his wages and they can't/won't subsidise. Deal to be done then? Barca are also deep in the shit, despite Messi going. 95% of their income is being spent on player wages!

So he's on around £270k a week then?

If Barca agreed to let him go for free, we could pay him £150k a week and give him a £15m signing on fee to cover the difference on a 3 year deal.

Or something like that.

Depends if we want him currently.

Or we could do Barcelona absolutely no favours at all, let them keep their super-overpaid 31 year old, sit back and enjoy the schadenfreude while we can, mes que un arrogance.

Or we can invest in Ilaix Moriba, whom they value at 15-20 mil euros.

I listened to that earlier too and thought the same thing. He’s still there and Juve haven’t gone in for him. We need another midfielder, I wonder if he’s an iron in the fire for the last week of the window.

One things for sure is Allegri like him and is a big fan of his, he bought him from Roma to Juventus. He was a key player for Allegri and his setup of team.
Supposedly he is coming in and Ramsey is going out. They are looking for a buyer at the moment
