Apparently the in-house commentators are discussing whether they want to do it or not
I hope the commentator boycott is permanent. I cannot stand the banal boring claptrap they come out with during games. I am quite happy to just listen to the crowd. And while they are at it the camera should concentrate on the action on the pitch. I have no interest in what or who is in the crowd or what is happening on the bench etc. Do this when there is a stop in play for an injury.

The BBC would have to make an agreement with the Premier League, and it’s pundits to be able to use the footage first.

many of those pundits are the same that work on the bbc, so may not be so simple.

I could see it literally just being highlights and nothing else - at best.

wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing got pulled.
I don’t think will pull the show - they would be in breach of their contract if they did and it would provide ammunition for the BBC to lose rights to other events which currently remain ‘protected’ (of which there aren’t many left).

The hypocrisy of footballers astounds me, didn’t stand up for what they believed in the World Cup but Gary Lineker gets set on and everyone’s getting all moralistic and now refusing to do interviews 🤷‍♀️

Match of the Day is like Top of the Pops. Not particularly relevant nowadays and you can easily find the content elsewhere.

But the quality of the pundits and presenter really isn’t the issue here.

An excellent piece by Barney Ronay on the whole debacle, as it seems many in here seem to be missing the point:

Exactly this. Ultimately nobody gives a shit who presents motd, if there's even anyone at all.

The issue is this despicable tory government being able to call in a favour off one of their mates from the old boys club and have people effectively censored for expressing a perfectly reasonable opinion. It wasn't even on air/at work.

It's a very very slippery slope if this sort of thing is allowed to happen.

People saying it'll be a better show for it seem to be missing the point entirely.

There seems to be quite a few people on here that don't understand the point of this situation and have resorted to making off hand "funny" comments that are quite banal and do nothing.

Also regarding the point about the World Cup someone brought up. Linekar was able to criticise the World Cup with no issues before or even criticised Corbyn before. Didn't seem like a problem then, being "political"

It's only a problem when he criticises the tories and their policies (on his own private account)

The fact his commentators and the rest of the presenters are standing in solidarity is a good thing.

Welcome to football discussion. Read the women’s football thread and how backwards and unfunny the average football fan is becomes very apparent.

There’s a BBC thread in the D&D section, the level of discussion would be better in there.

I don’t think they’d need to agree anything with the individual commentators that the premier league employ.

Don’t the league provide the world feed to all broadcast partners? I doubt the premier league will want their coverage to be disrupted by this so they’ll be fine with it. I don’t see the programme being pulled.

I wasn’t suggesting the bbc would pull the show through choice…. More that they might find it impossible to even produce the show, and have no choice but to pull it.

If the get the world feed from the premier league which I expect they’ve already agreed to, it’s just a matter of loading it into their systems and pressing play. They don’t really need to do anything.

I'm in the minority, it seems, of quite liking a bit of tactical chat etc between highlights, interviews and such.
The show would be pretty boring if it was just highlights, for me anyway.

I'm not a big fan of Lineker as a person, I think he's a bit of a knob but the Beeb are in the wrong here and it's good to see so many people taking a stance against them.

I think Tottenham should make a stand also and decide not to play, seems like that would be the sensible idea
Wow, that's some major level support we have there, been backing Gary for months.

The difference is there is unlikely to be any punishment of note for boycotting interviews.

At the WC players were being threatened with being booked for wearing the armband.
